Ayushmann and Tahira are from the same town, Chandigarh. Their paths often crossed, but the story did not pick up the pace for a very long time. It all started when both of them started attending the same tuition classes in 12th standard. Tahira revealed the details in one of her interviews:
"Both of us attended the same Physics tuition class when we were in the 12th standard. It was a batch of around 60 students and when I first met Ayushmann, I thought his name was Abhishek. Both me and my friend had a crush on him, but outwardly ignored him throughout the year. I later discovered that he also had a crush on me."
Ayushmann had also explained in one of his interviews about how he felt to know about Tahira having a crush on him:
"When I got to know that she has a crush on me, I couldn’t believe it. I never ever thought she could feel this way for me. There were so many good looking guys in the class! I was nowhere close to them. Also I didn’t believe in looking around or indulging in mild flirtations. Class over, I would head home. So, when someone told me that Tahira had a crush on me, I was on cloud nine. The girl, who every guy had a crush on, had a crush on me! It seemed impossible but I was damn happy."

They both liked each other, but none of them dared to confess it. This teenage crush could have vanished into thin air if there had not been an interesting twist in the story. One fine day, Tahira's father told her that they will be having dinner at one of his old friends’ place, who is an astrologer. Tahira got very excited when she got to know about the occupation of this certain friend of her dad's, and decided to ask him about how would she fare in the competitive entrance exams she was preparing for. On reaching there, she found out that it was Ayushmann's residence. They both were, so far, oblivious of the fact that their parents were friends! And this time, they did not let the moment pass, and finally talked to each other. Giving the details of this meeting in an interview, Ayushmann asserted:
"During that family dinner, we became friends. I played along that night. (Laughs) I behaved normally and didn’t let her know that I knew she had a crush on me."
On the other hand, Tahira jokingly shared that till date, she and her hubby “blames (or credits)” their parents for bringing them together. She had shared:
"I had this impression of him being a ‘cute guy’. But that night, he bowled me over with his charm, wit and of course, with the songs he sang."
They became good friends after they completed high school and began dating. They both pursued master's degree in Mass Communication at Punjab University (PU), but from different colleges. Their partnership was more about a competition where they would fight against each other in debate and dramatics competition. They both were interested in theatre and later joined the same theatre group. Tahira explained:
"He was a part of Aaghaaz in DAV College and I was a part of the SD College theatre group. Later, we floated a new theatre group outside our colleges, Manchtantra. Pizzeria in Sector 9, Kashyap canteen and Stu-C on PU campus, and Stop n' Stare in Sector 10, were our favourite haunts.”

Do you know something? Tahira had married Ayushmann, when he was still a struggling actor. In an interview with Mid-Day, the Meri Pyari Bindu star shared:
“When I got married, I had no money. Tahira has been doing better than me professionally for the longest time. She was gutsy enough to marry a man just for love and have faith in his talent. She is a rockstar; she was a professor, had her own PR firm in Chandigarh. She was also the programming head of a radio station in Punjab. She supported me in every possible way. I was a struggling actor, which is often a gamble. But there was never any ego between us. When there's love, there's no scope for ego. Most men in India aren't secure enough to be comfortable with such an arrangement. It comes with the family. It depends on how your father treats your mother. But a man, no matter where he comes from, could always trigger a change. If it's a patriarchal family, the dynamics are different. In my case, Tahira became the daughter in a household that had none.”
Marriage was always on their mind, but when Ayushmann told Tahira about his desire of becoming an actor, she gave up all the hopes of tying the knot. But at the same time, she stood by him through thick and thin. Ayushmann explained this by saying:
"We wanted to get married. That was our only plan after college. We didn’t think about our careers, but only about how and when we would get married. However, when I shared my aspirations of becoming an actor with her, she gave up all hopes of marriage. She knew that her parents wouldn’t accept ‘an actor’ or be cool with the idea of their daughter leading such a life in Mumbai."
But, their love was strong enough to overcome all the problems, and Ayushmann proposed to Tahira in the most subtle yet charming way. Tahira gushed about the dream proposal in an interview:
"Ayushmann formally proposed to me just last year when we got married in November 2011. He did it like a gentleman with a ring, music playing in the background, red roses, wine and a romantic candlelight dinner."
With the blessings of their families, they got married in November 2011.

Marriage certainly connected the two in an inseparable bond, but life tested them even thereafter. The two were in a long-distance relationship post-marriage for a few years, as Ayushmann was in Mumbai and Tahira was in Chandigarh. Things were going on like this for a while when Ayushmann’s huge break came in the form of the phenomenal success of his first film, Vicky Donor. Speaking about the same, Tahira shared in an interview:
“When I saw Vicky Donor on the big screen for the first time, it was a surreal moment for me. I was transported back in time to when he had first told me he wanted to be an actor. And I had laughed. We definitely didn't expect Vicky Donor to do so well and never, in my wildest dreams, did I imagine that a song I had been listening to for the past 9 years (Paani Da) would become such a phenomenon!”
Yes, Ayushmann is now a celebrity and they do get noticed when they step outside in the world, but they did not let his fame get into their heads. Even with their busy schedules, they make it a point to take out some quality time for each other. Talking about what he loves the most about Tahira, Ayushmann said:
"Tahira is more intelligent than I am, she keeps me grounded and she is so beautiful."
And, Tahira reciprocated by saying:
“Ayushmann is a sensitive, romantic and a very caring person. He makes sure he gives me enough love and attention to keep me happy."
Tahira is now a director/producer by profession. She has even directed a short film, Toffee, which was produced by her dear hubby. Tahira soon wants to enter the world of directing feature films. She also admitted in an interview with Deccan Chronicle that if Ayushmann fits in, she would love to direct him. She had shared earlier this year:
“We have been friends before we got married. I have known him closely. I don’t have anything for him right now but if anything falls into place, I don’t mind directing him if he fits a character. Although I don’t know how that will work out… it will be a different experience for both of us.” Meanwhile, Tahira is also happy with the kind of right choices Ayushmann is making these days. She gushes, “I am proud of him. He is on the right track. He discusses all his scripts with me and he always wanted to be part of films that are high on content.”

As we had mentioned earlier, Ayushmann and Tahira are a happily married couple and have two kids. On the birth of his daughter, Ayushmann expressed his joy by saying:
"There’s a birth of a father again. Was proud to be the first one to get married in my batch of 99 of St John’s High School, Chandigarh. I’m also the youngest father. It’s a feat to be a parent in your 20s. It’s overwhelming! O, boy! It’s a baby girl! I learnt humility from my mother, chivalry from my wife, will become compassionate because of my daughter."
To sum up the wonderful journey of these teenage lovers-turned married couple-turned parents, let us tell you what the two think of each other after more than a decade of togetherness! Ayushmann says:
"It is one of my achievements that I am married to her. It is difficult to find a girl like her. She has been with me through thick and thin. She was a pillar of support during my struggling days. She is more mature than I am. I am still childish. I value her advice."
And, this is what Tahira has to say about her darling husband:
"As a husband, Ayush is a much better person than the guy I was dating. He is an amazing human being and I love him for his sound character- which is not just reflected in him as a husband, but also as an employee, employer, friend, son, brother, son-in-law... He makes the best companion I could ever ask for."
The journey of Ayushmann Khurrana and Tahira Kashyap from being friends to becoming soulmates is not just enchanting, but very inspiring too. So, here’s wishing this lovely couple a blissful life ahead!
