#1. Surprise acne

You’ve been religiously removing makeup and washing your face before hitting the bed at night, but that’s not enough, because there are some acne breakouts that occur because of the fluffy, unwashed, dirt-laden pillows that you comfortably rest your head on. When your pillow covers are not washed regularly, there is a build-up of germs and dirt, not just from the environment, but also your hair and skin when you rest on them. The same get transferred to your skin, clog your pores and voila, you have acne!

#2. Wrinkles and sleep lines

Sleeping on your side with the pillow touching your face causes facial compression. Over a period of time this position exerts pressure on your face and the result is wrinkles and sleep lines that are difficult to get rid of unless you go for Botox treatment.

#3. Hairfall

Usually you hear people tell you not to sleep with your hair untied and always make a plait/ponytail, so that you don’t end up waking up to your tresses on the bed. But, regardless of whether your hair is tied or untied, you do see a couple of strands astray on the bed, right? This happens because of the friction between your hair and your pillow. At night, you toss and turn and your hair ends up succumbing to the friction. Apparently tying your hair does reduce hair fall, but the best would be sleeping without pillows, no?

Here are some tips on how you can prevent pillow covers from becoming a storehouse of germs:

  • Sleep on your back so that you keep ageing at bay, for as long as you can. After all, who will want to go for expensive beauty treatments when there is a way out, without spending any money at all.

  • Wash your pillow covers at least once a week in a fragrance-free detergent. If you are fighting acne issues by applying ointments, then chances are that they sediment on the pillow too and can cause more harm and render all the treatments ineffective.
  • Expose your pillows to sun rays to kill germs naturally. If that is not possible, put them in a hot dryer for a few minutes.
  • If you have silk pillow covers, then get them dry-cleaned.

  • If you oil your hair and sleep overnight, wash your pillow cover the next day, else your hair will absorb all the dirt that may have built-up overnight and harm your scalp and skin.
  • Don’t sleep with wet hair as your pillow will absorb moisture from your hair and become a perfect ground for germs to multiply.
