In a recent interview, iconic singer, Adnan Sami opened up about his decision to become an Indian citizen after giving up on his Pakistani citizenship back in 2016.
One of the finest singers of all time, Adnan Sami clearly needs no introduction. Over the decades, he has proved the mettle of his singing skills and knowledge of music with his melodious tracks and judgments as a judge in multiple reality shows. The actor was born in London on August 15, 1971, and was a citizen of Pakistan until 2016. The singer spent most of his time in London and did his schooling there. Adnan took lessons about Indian classical music from the legendary santoor maestro, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.
Adnan Sami also took singing lessons and learnt many other musical instruments. As a teenager, he was described as the fastest man on the piano keyboard in the world by a US-based magazine, Keyboard. It is clearly visible that Adnan had access to music right from an early age, and even the people, who taught him music were also exceptionally good at it. In a recent interview with the Humans of Bombay, Adnan Sami opened up about his decision to become an Indian citizen and give up his Pakistan citizenship back in 2016. In his response to the question, the critically-acclaimed singer revealed that people have been mocking him for his decision since the day he announced that he finally gained India’s citizenship back in 2016. Adnan admitted that people assumed he did it because of money. But, with a savage response to it, Adnan shared that none of them are aware of his family background. Revealing details about his wealthy family, he said:
"Some people in Pakistan turned around and said, ‘Oh, he has chosen India because he has got more money over there, he’s making more money over there. I said, ‘Excuse me, do you have any idea what my family background is? Do you have any idea that money has never been a factor in my life? I have been blessed to have been born and brought up in a very well-to-do, wealthy family."
Further, in the same interview, Adnan Sami also shared how he left so many expensive things that he used to inherit in Pakistan to move to India. The singer explained how money was never a problem for him, and the sole reason behind his decision to become an Indian citizen is the love, support and respect that he has received from Indians for all these years. The singer admitted that both as an artist and as a person, he had received a lot of admiration from the people of India, which played a huge role in his decision to get Indian citizenship. He said:
"Money, if at all, I have given up a lot, because there’s a tremendous amount of stuff that I could have inherited from there (Pakistan) which I have given away. The kind of love and appreciation I got over here, overwhelmed me as an artiste."

For the unversed, Adnan Sami’s father, Arshad Sami Khan was a Pakistani diplomat and a former fighter pilot. While his mother, Naureen Khan was an Indian from Jammu. Not only this, Adnan Sami’s paternal great-great-grandfather, General Ahmed Jan was the military advisor to King Abdur Rahman Khan. The singer’s paternal great-grandfather, Agha Mehfooz was also a Governor under King Amanullah Khan’s reign. The list of famous names in Adnan’s family is quite long that clearly speaks volumes about his family’s wealth and history.
