Alka Yagnik's journey as a singer: From singing bhajans for AIR at 6 to debuting in Bollywood with Payal Ki Jhankaar

Alka Yagnik was born on March 20, 1966, in Kolkata into a Gujarati family. While her father, Dharmendra Shankar was a businessman, her mother, Shubha Yagnik was a trained singer of Indian classical music.

Right from an early age, Shubha introduced her daughter to music as she knew that she had the potential to become a successful singer. At the age of six, Alka was singing bhajans for Akashvani (All India Radio) and started grabbing the attention of music producers.

After making a name as a child singer in Kolkata, Alka Yagnik went to Bombay with her mother, Shubha Yagnik to kick-start her singing career in Hindi cinema. It was in 1980, when Alka Yagnik sang the song, Thirkat Ang in the film, Payal Ki Jhankaar and made her debut as a singer in Bollywood at the age of 14.

In the coming years, she sang songs like Mere Angane Mein, Hum Tum Rahenge Akele, Pakka Jamun Todo Nahi, So Gaya Yeh Jahan, and Ek Do Teen, which made her a recognised voice in the Indian music industry.
