In an old interview, Amar Singh Chamkila's 'dhol' player tripped down memory lane and recalled the day when the singer and Amarjot were assassinated.

For the unversed, Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra's film, Amar Singh Chamkila was released on Netflix on April 12, 2024, and cinema fanatics are going gaga over the same. For those who don't know, Amar Singh Chamkila was a famous Punjabi singer whose songs have captivated a zillion hearts and continue to do the same. At the mere age of 27, the singer was assassinated along with his wife, Amarjot. Amid the ongoing craze about the singer's biography, let us look back in time when the singer's dhol player, Lal Chand, divulged details about the day when the singer was killed along with Amarjot.
In an old interview with Noble TV Canada in 2020, Amar Singh Chamkila's dhol player, Lal Chand, recalled the day when the singer was assassinated. He said that during lunchtime, each of the team members arrived at the office, and all of them hung out for 10 minutes after Chamkila arrived there. Lal Chand stated that before all of them left the place, the singer had told everyone not to worry much and ironically mentioned that the bullet that would strike him would surely have his name on it. Lal Chand said:
“We all got to the office around lunchtime. Chamkila arrived, and we hung out for about 10 minutes before heading to the show. Right before we left, Chamkila told everyone not to worry. He said, ‘I sing the songs, not you. Jis goli pe mera naam likheya hoga, o mere te vajni hi vajni aa.'"

In the same interview, Lal Chand mentioned that on their way to Mehsampur, Punjab, where the assassination took place ahead of Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot's performance, he pointed out at a film's poster to the singer and they all decided to go to watch the movie once the show was over. Lal Chand further regretted that it could never happen.
Talking more about the same, Lal Chand stated that after reaching the destination while everyone was out of the car, he and Amarjot were still inside. He mentioned that when he was taking out his dhol, he had seen someone with his face covered come and start firing. Lal Chand stated he watched Amarjot getting hit by a bullet while she was about to come out of the car. Lal Chand stated:
"Everybody exited the car, including Chamkila. Amarjot and I were the only ones still inside. I stepped out and opened the boot to take my dhol, Amarjot was still inside. No sooner had I picked up the dhol, I saw from the corner of my eye a man with a covered face pull a machine gun out and start firing. I bolted from the spot, but as I was trying to find cover, I saw Amarjot get hit. She was just about to step out of the car."
For those who don't know, the case of the assassination of Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot is still not solved, but several people believe that it was done by Sikh militants. However, in the same interview, Lal Chand mentioned that he heard the shooters swearing at the singer before they fired at him from the back.

Lal Chand shared that before Chamkila was knocked down by the bullet, he noticed Amarjot bleeding and addressed her as 'Babbi' while asking what had happened to her. Lal Chand mentioned that he never knew that Amarjot was called 'Babbi' by Chamkila. Lal Chand could be quoted as saying:
"I could hear them swearing at Chamkila while they were shooting. They shot him in the back, but before being hit, he looked at Amarjot and noticed the blood coming out of her. He asked, ‘Babbi, tenu ki hoya.’ I never knew before then that this is what Chamkila called Amarjot.”
