Sharmin Segal addressed audience's dissatisfaction over her role in 'Heeramandi' and claims that she enacted as per the filmmaker's interpretation of the character.
Sharmin Segal has been at the forefront of several headlines owing to her recent performance in her uncle, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The actress, who played the role of ‘Alamzeb’ in the show seems to have made the audiences remained dissatisfied with her performance. They have proclaimed that the actress lacked in both expressions and taste in every bit of her on-screen presence. And now, Sharmin extends her justification for the same.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Sharmin Segal shared her outlook on the mammoth criticism she has been receiving for her apparent ‘flat’ performance as ‘Alamzeb’ in Heeramandi. In her defence, the actress remarked how she enacted her role exactly the same way as the filmmaker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali envisioned and interpreted it. Sharmin further remarked how the basic character traits of ‘Alamzeb’ had always been nuanced, docile and vulnerable, each of which she displayed with full thrust in her performance. She expressed:
“She is quiet, she is nuanced, she is innocent, she is vulnerable to that degree, and I think it stands out a little differently because she is not a tawaif. So that I think is an important part of the character and how me as an actor and Sanjay Sir as the director interpreted the character.”

Speaking more about the same, Sharmin then remarked how as an artist herself, she has indeed put in an invaluable amount of hard work and dedication to such a giant project like Heeramandi. Moreover, she admitted how it would always remain in the hands of the audience whether they would like or dislike her work, adding that the viewers have the final right to comment on it. In her words:
“I did put in a lot of hard work and at the end of the day I gave it my all. But I gave it my all eventually to give it to my audience and they do have the right to voice their opinions, and, in the world, we live in today it’s very easy and accessible to voice your opinion.”
In yet another of her earlier interviews with News18 Showsha, Sharmin Segal opened up about how she has been keeping herself sane and composed despite the harsh criticism coming her way. The actress explained that at the end of the day, she is a creative person and she also acknowledges both the positive and negative feedback that she has got from her audience.

For the unversed, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sharmin Segal share a pretty close relationship with one another, since the latter is the niece of the filmmaker. Previously, during an interaction with The Hindustan Times, Sanjay talked about the kind of performance Sharmin delivered in his series and recalled how the actress always wanted to underplay in her role. Recalling their conversation, Sanjay had said:
“She kept saying, ‘Mama, I’ll underplay.' I said, ‘Underplay? Are you thinking I’m going to ask you to overplay?”
