Despite being married to Jaya, Amitabh couldn’t stop himself from falling for Rekha, and it became one of the most scandalous affairs of all time. However, when the news of their affair reached Jaya’s ears, she made it very clear to Rekha that she would never leave her husband.
Though Amitabh Bachchan has always denied rumours of his relationship with Rekha, she has often given hints, making the story believable. During a podcast, Meri Saheli, a renowned author and film historian, Hanif Zaveri, spoke about Amitabh Bachchan’s first affair with a woman named Maya, who worked for British Airways. According to Hanif, Amitabh’s first romance began in Kolkata while he was working at the company. At that time, Maya came to his life and the duo fell madly-in-love with each other.
When Amitabh Bachchan went to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting, he stayed with his uncle in his bungalow. Maya used to visit him frequently, which scared Amitabh as he thought her visits would not go nicely with his uncle. He had a fear that his mother, Teji Bachchan would find out about Maya.
Maya was very bold and openly flirted with Amitabh, which made him uncomfortable. When Amitabh shared his concern with actor, Mehmood’s brother, Anwar Ali, who was working with him in the film, Saat Hindustani, he asked him to part ways with Maya. Speaking about the same, Anwar said:
“You won’t be able to spend your life with Maya. It will be difficult for her to fit into the Bachchan family, and as you move forward, more problems will arise'.”
It was in 1970, when Mr Bachchan first met Jaya Bhaduri at the Pune Film Institute. Jaya was already a star, and Amitabh was trying to make a career in Bollywood. It was on the sets of Ek Nazar, when Cupid struck, as Jaya realised she had developed feelings for Mr Bachchan. On the other hand, he, too, couldn’t resist from falling in love with the Bengali beauty.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan had a chat mangni pat vyaah, and the reason is quite interesting. Amitabh and Jaya wanted to go to London to celebrate the success of their film, Zanjeer, along with other friends. But Big B’s father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, told him that he could go with Jaya only when the two were married. And on June 3, 1973, the couple embarked on the journey of their ‘happily ever after’.
