Amitabh Bachchan On Why Jaya Bachchan Is His Worst Critic, Recalls When She Walked Out Of A Film

Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan turned 81 on October 11, 2023, and the entire film industry bowed down to one of the living legends of Indian cinema. While the internet and social media were buzzing in his praises, several fans gathered outside his residence in Mumbai. Just like every year, Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday was nothing less than a festival for his fans and a reminder to cinema lovers that there will never be another Big B.

Amitabh Bachchan calls his wife, Jaya Bachchan, his ‘worst critic’

In order to celebrate Amitabh Bachchan’s 81st birthday, famous film critic, Komal Nahta hosted an interview with the magnum star on his show, Starry Nights. In the heart-to-heart conversation with Komal, Amitabh Bachchan shared a series of revelations from his personal and professional lives. From talking about how he spends his Sundays to recalling the dialogues of his famous films, Big B opened up about a lot of things.

One statement from Amitabh Bachchan in his conversation with Komal Nahta caught everyone’s attention, as he labelled his wife, Jaya Bachchan, as ‘his worst critic’. When Komal asked Big B to reveal the name of his worst critic from the family, the latter promptly took Jaya Bachchan’s name. The iconic actor shared how Jaya criticises him time and again for the kind of films he had done in the past. Not only this, Big B also added how she once walked out of one of his trials. The incident left Komal in splits as Amitabh shared the hilarious anecdote about his married life. Big B said:

"She will see a film (and say) ‘What is this kind of film that you are doing?’ And there have been times in the past when she has walked out of one my trials (auditions) and there has been some kind of domestic problem when I get home."

However, further in the same interview, Amitabh Bachchan lauded his wife, Jaya Bachchan, for her instincts. The doting husband admitted that his wife is incredibly gifted with instincts, sharing how Jaya meets a person and can predict that person’s capability of making a good film. However, Big B also mentioned that Jaya’s instinct about him was absolutely right, leaving Komal Nahta in awe of him. The doting husband said:

''Jaya is incredible instinctive. She will meet a person for the first time and come and tell me ‘I like this guy, he’ll make a good film’. I say but he hasn’t started it even. (She says) ‘No, but I just feel that he is going to make a good film’. Her instinct when she chose me was absolutely right."

Time and again, we have seen Amitabh Bachchan lauding his wife, Jaya Bachchan, for always backing him and preventing him from going off the track in his acting career. Once, in an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15, Big B admitted that his wife, Jaya is quite strict but added that her strictness is the reason behind his success. The actor admitted that he reaches straight home from work as he’s scared of his loving wife. Big B said:

"She's strict and lenient too. I'm saved. I have to go home. I don't want to be thrashed. So, when she's strict it's better if you stay in. It scares me so I don't talk much about my personal life."
