Annu Kapoor talks about the controversies surrounding his kiss scene with Priyanka Chopra in '7 Khoon Maaf', and recalls the actress being 'very upset' about the scene.
Veteran actor, Annu Kapoor recently sat on an interview with ANI News for a podcast, where he opened up about various incidents of his film career. The actor, who has over 45 years of industry experience in Bollywood, had gotten into a controversy surrounding a kiss scene that he had to shoot with Priyanka Chopra for the 2011 film, 7 Khoon Maaf. While the gossip had died down over the years, Annu recently clarified what had happened behind the scenes.
Annu Kapoor recalled his experience shooting an intimate scene with Priyanka Chopra in the ANI podcast. When asked about the controversial kiss, the actor revealed that Priyanka was hesitant to kiss him in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf, probably because he was not the hero. Calling her ‘aaj kal ki ladki’, Annu claimed that Priyanka might have been reluctant because his looks and personality did not match the criteria of a movie’s hero. He was heard saying:
“Agar mai hero hota, to Priyanka Chopra ko koi aapatti nahi hoti. Hero ko chumne mein kisi heroine ko apatti nahi hai. Wo to main hu, na shakal hai, na surat na personality, isliye problem huyi.”
Annu Kapoor commented on Priyanka’s reluctance, saying no heroine hesitates to kiss the hero. He recalled how Vishal Bhardwaj had expressed that Priyanka felt shy shooting the scene. In response, the actor had suggested that he remove the scene if it made her uncomfortable. However, the director did not agree. Annu Kapoor recalled by saying:
“Vishal Bhardwaj told me that she is being shy. I told him, ‘If she’s uncomfortable, remove the scene’. But he said, ‘Why should I remove the scene? It’s important.’ I’m a serious man, I don’t enjoy joking around on set. I got over with the combined shots. When it came to my solo shots, even assistants were impressed with how I performed them.”
Annu Kapoor further stated that the incident had upset Priyanka Chopra when she heard of his comment on heroines preferring to kiss the hero or a good-looking guy. The actress had expressed her irritation with how Annu Kapoor analysed the incident. Back in 2011, the popular Bollywood actress, Priyanka Chopra expressed her irritation in an interview with The Hindustan Times, saying:
“If he wants to do intimate scenes and pass such cheap comments, then he should do those kind of films. Such scenes were never part of our film… I don’t think he knew that his comments would upset me. But, his statements have really upset me. It was very wrong of him to speak the way he did.”
7 Khoon Maaf, starring Priyanka Chopra, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vivaam Shah, was a 2011 film adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s novel, Sussane’s Seven Husbands. This dark thriller film saw Priyanka as ‘Sunnane’ who ends up marrying seven different people, only for these husbands to end up dead under mysterious circumstances. Annu Kapoor played the role of ‘Inspector Kimmat Lal’ one of the protagonist’s husbands.
