In an interview with Neelesh Misra on his show, 'The Slow Interview With Neelesh Misra', popular director, Anurag Kashyap talked about his daughter, Aaliyah, and why he calls himself a bad father.
Born on September 10, 1972, in the Gorakhpur city of Uttar Pradesh, Anurag Kashyap, never-ever in his wildest dreams, had thought about becoming a filmmaker. He was a student of Zoology at Delhi University's Hansraj College, and that's when, during a film festival in the city, he had watched legendary director, Vittorio De Sirca's iconic 1984 Italian film, Bicycle Thieves, that had changed everything.
After watching the movie, Anurag Kashyap had arrived in the city of dreams, Bombay, with Rs. 5000 in his pocket, along with the big dream of making it great in the Indian film industry. Soon the money ran out, and he had made beaches his bedroom and pavements his living room. After a lot of struggle, he had finally found some work at the Prithvi Theatre, and the rest is history. With movies like Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur, No Smoking, Dev.D, Gulaal, That Girl in Yellow Boots, Mukkabaaz, Manmarziyaan, and web series, Sacred Games, he is now one of the most influential filmmakers of all time.

In a conversation with popular storyteller, Neelesh Misra on his show, The Slow Interview with Neelesh Misra, the maverick filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap, opened up about his life's darkest secrets, mistakes, accomplishments, and the lessons he had learnt after losing a lot of things. In his heart-to-heart conversation, when Neelesh had questioned Anurag, whether he is a good father or not. The answer given by the Raman Raghav director was an eye-opener for everyone, as Anurag had highlighted the fact that he just fulfilled the requirements of his daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap but was never present in person for her. He had said:
“Mujhe nahi lagta ki main acha pita hu. Mujhe lagta hai ki main intentionally acha pita hu. Maine sab kuch provide kiya hai. Par maine samay kabhi diya he nahi hai. Vo mere andar hai ki matlab har saal chutti pe leke jata tha main ek baar. Lekin na toh maine apni beti (Aaliyah) ko samay diya, maine apne parivaar mai kisi ko samay nahi diya. Vo mujhe ab ehsaas hota hai. 26 saal se main patani kisi dhunki main chale ja raha hu. Maine samay nahi diya kisi ko bhi.”

When Neelesh Misra had asked Anurag Kashyap to describe his daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, he had started gushing for some seconds and had stated that it's hard to express in words, the love he holds for his daughter in his heart. However, Anurag had sweetly stated that his soul stays in his daughter, and she is his parrot. The actor had also heaped praises on Aaliyah and admitted that his daughter at 18 is much more aware of herself and the world than he was at 30. In his words:
“Meri jaan hai uske andar. Vo toota hai mera. Kuch nahi baki toh. Main 30 main jitna samajdaar nahin tha, vo 18 main hain. Vo hain uska apna hain. Vo zada samajhdaar hain. Vo bahut aware hain ki use papa ki kamjoriyaan nahi chahiye apne andar. Usko ‘No’ bolna bahut strongly aata hain aur vo apne leye ladti hai.”
Going further in his interview, when Anurag Kashyap was asked whether his mistake of not giving enough time to his loved ones had ended those relationships. Answering this, Anurag had admitted that many of his relationships had ended because of his incapability to give enough time to those bonds. Although, the director had also claimed that he is still in touch with people with whom he no longer shares the same bond because nobody hates him. He had explained:
“Mere rishtey esi leye tute kyuki maine un rishto ko samay nahi diya. Rishto ko samay nahi diya. Apno ko samay nahi diya. Vo sab mere dost hai. Meri zindagi main koi nafrat nahin karta mujhse. Ya toh gussa hai, ya hurt hai, par nafrat koi nahin karta mujhse. Vo sab hai mere sath.”

Not everyone is aware of the fact that Anurag Kashyap has failed twice in marriage and is still going strong in love, as he's in a steady relationship with Shubhra Shetty. Talking about Anurag's first marriage, he got married to film editor, Aarti Bajaj in 2003. Together they had welcomed a baby girl, whom they had named Aaliyah, but sadly, in 2009, they had parted their ways with each other. After which, Anurag got married for the second time to actress, Kalki Koechlin in 2011, but just after four years, in 2015, they had announced their divorce.
Anurag Kashyap is often seen sharing lovely pictures with his ladylove, Shubhra Shetty on his Instagram handle. The couple had started dating in the year 2015 and had officially confirmed their relationship in the year 2018. Shubhra had grabbed the limelight due to her more than 20-years of age difference with Anurag. In an interview with Filmfare, the Bombay Velvet director had confirmed the news and had said, "I'm in a relationship after a long time. I don't believe it is anybody's business to know, everyone needs to be in love at some stage or the other. I love the emotion of love. Even at 90, I'll be in love."
While Anurag Kashyap's films are often categorised as dark and violent, there's no denying the fact that his personal life is full of different shades and colours. From accepting his mistakes, trying to resolve them, and influencing his massive fanbase with his authentic self, Anurag is not just an incredible director but indeed a special human being.
