The singer had always heaped immense praise and love on his mother, Kareema Begum’s influence on his life and career. From crediting her entirely for his success in the music industry to revealing how many things she had sacrificed for his dreams and happiness, Kareema ji was an epitome of a mother's love. But the doting son’s mother has passed away in Chennai after being ill for some time now, according to various reports in the media. On December 28, 2020, legendary music composer, AR Rahman took to his Twitter handle and shared a beautiful portrait of his mother, Kareema Begum and confirmed all the reports of his mother’s demise by multiple media houses. It has been reported that Rahman’s mother was ill for a while and has taken her last breath in Chennai. Soon a lot of his industry mates has started sharing their condolences to the doting son, who was deeply attached to his mother and had always credited her for his success. Earlier in an interview with CT, AR Rahman had revealed that it was his mother, Kareema Begum’s idea to put him in the field of music. Surprisingly, he had stated that his ammi jaan had made him leave school in the XI standard and go on to pursue a career in music. He had said, “She has music instincts. Spiritually, she is much higher than me in the way she thinks and takes decisions. For instance, her decision of making me take up music. She made me leave school in Class XI and take up music. It was her conviction that music is the line for me.”
For the uninitiated, AR Rahman had written one of the most popular songs of his career and in the history of music in India, Maa Tujhe Salaam for his mother, Kareema Begum. The Oscar-winning music composer had revealed it in an interview with the IANS a few years ago and had stated, “I had this in my mind on how to crack it because I was very objective about it, thinking whether patriotism will work or not. So, I was like, forget about the country, let’s do it as a personal song -- like singing a song for one’s mother.
