Saira Banu once spoke about how AR Rahman left her alone on their honeymoon night. The couple has recently announced separation.
In a piece of sad news, Oscar-winning music composer, AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu are no longer together. The couple confirmed news about the separation after 29 years of marriage in a joint statement released by their lawyer, Vandana Shah. Amid all this, did you know that Saira had once revealed that she had no idea where Rahman was during their honeymoon night?
During an interview with Siddharth Kannan, actor Rahman, who is reportedly related to AR Rahman, shared a funny anecdote from the honeymoon night of the music composer. The Dil Se music composer did not spend time with Saira, but instead was playing the Veena in the other room. Actor Rahman remembered that when AR Rahman got married, he took Saira for their honeymoon to a hill station. Rahman had called Saira, late at night around 12 or 1, and she answered. When he asked about AR Rahman, Saira said:
"'I don't know'. He was in another room, practicing his veena."
The pair married in 1995 in an arranged marriage set-up. Reportedly, Saira was not Rahman's first choice , as he had decided that Saira's younger sister, Meher would be his wife. However, when she met Saira, Rahman's mom knew that she was the right choice for his son. Their bond grew and they developed mutual love and respect for each other. They had clear expectations from the marriage and were always on the same page. Despite all of this, their separation was not an easy pill for their fans to digest. The couple is blessed with three children, Khatija and Rahima, and a son named Ameen Rahman.
AR Rahman's separation announcement looks like a dream. This recent development revives an incident in 2023 when the music composer stood like a rock supporter with Saira and defended her against the derogatory remarks made by actress Kasturi Shankar. During the Vikatan Awards held in 2023, Kasturi posted a clip from the event and raised questions about Saira's Tamil proficiency. She asked Saira publicly why she was not fluent in Tamil, about her mother tongue, and what language she used at home. The fans did not like Saira's life intrusion. Rahman took charge of the situation calmly and respectfully replied in Tamil. He highlighted the importance of love and understanding. Thoughtfully, he wrote, “Kadhalukku Mariyadhai”, which meant respect for love.
The divorce statement released by divorce lawyer Vandana Shah explained that after many years of marriage, Saira Banu decided to opt for separation from AR Rahman because of considerable emotional strain in their relationship. The note also highlighted that the couple did care for one another, but the challenges they faced created a gap that could not be bridged. Their three kids requested privacy during this tough time.
