Arijit Singh was evicted from the reality show, ‘Fame Gurukul’

Born in Murshidabad, West Bengal, on April 25, 1987, Arijit always wanted to be a singer and was inspired by his mother, Aditi Singh. Arijit comes from a musical family as his mother, grandmother and maternal aunt were singers, while his maternal uncle was a tabla player.

Arijit participated in the reality show, Fame Gurukul in 2005 at the age of 18. Within just six weeks before the finale, he was voted out by audience polling. Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered him a song for Saawariya, but it was never released. He was also signed by Kumar Taurani for an album, which was also never released.

After Fame Gurukul, Arijit again participated in the reality show, 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, which he eventually won and used the prize money to set up his recording studio. He started his career as a music programmer and assisted music directors like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Mithoon, Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam Chakraborty.

Arijit Singh became an overnight star

It was never easy for Arijit Singh, and he worked hard to cement his position in the music industry. As he assisted renowned music directors, Arijit began singing in Telugu films. In 2011, he made his Bollywood musical debut with the song, Phir Mohabbat from the film, Murder 2.

Arijit was getting noticed, and people had a vague idea about who he was, but his breakthrough came with the film, Aashiqui 2, which made him an overnight star. The title track of the film, Tum Hi Ho became an instant hit and reached the top charts. All the songs sung by him in the film were hugely applauded.

Arijit’s popularity rose, and he started getting many offers. With songs like Kabira, Ilahi, Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse, Laal Ishq, Mast Magan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Aayat, Kesariya and many more, Arijit became a name to reckon with in Bollywood.

Arijit Singh charges Rs. 10 lakh per song

Arijit Singh is one of the highest-paid singers today and reportedly charges Rs. 10 lakh per song. Not just this, the singer reportedly charges Rs. 50 lakhs for a private event and Rs. 1.5 crore for a one-hour concert. As per the Forbes Celebrity list, Arijit’s reported income was Rs. 71 crores in 2019.

Arijit Singh’s first marriage and separation

As per multiple reports, Arijit tied the knot while he was working as a music programmer. His marriage hit a rough patch soon and didn’t even last for a year. Reports have it that Arijit’s first marriage was done in haste and the couple separated soon. It was also rumoured that the singer had to go through an ugly divorce.

Arijit Singh's secret second wedding

After going through a heartbreak and a bitter divorce, Arijit went on to date his childhood friend, Koel Roy, who was also divorced. After Arijit’s immense stardom, the singer tied the knot with Koel in 2014 at Tarapeeth temple in West Bengal, following the Bengali wedding rituals. Arijit Singh had kept his wedding a secret affair, and not many from the Hindi film industry were invited. Reportedly, the only known name who had attended his second marriage was the music composer, Pritam.

Arijit didn’t share any pictures with his wife, Koel for two years and kept his marital status hidden from the media. During one of the interviews, when he was asked about his wife, Arijit simply told the reporter not to ask any personal questions. Arijit Singh and his wife, Koel Roy are parents to three beautiful children. Arijit and Koel are blessed with two sons and a step-daughter from Koel’s first marriage.

It was in 2016, when Arijit shared a picture with his wife, Koel, to wish his fans on New Year. In an interview with Filmfare, Arijit revealed the reason for keeping his marriage away from the media. He said: 

“We got married a long time ago. But we’ve made it official now with a ceremony. I had a lot of complications in my life. I was going through a separation. I’ve gone through much. I don’t want to go through it again. So let’s not talk about it.”

Arijit Singh’s ugly fight with Salman Khan

Salman Khan and Arijit Singh’s cold war started during an award function in 2014. It so happened that Salman was hosting the event, and he invited Arijit to come on the stage and receive the award. The actor asked Arijit, “Tu hai winner?”, who was dressed in a casual outfit. To which, the singer replied, “Aap logon ne sula diya.” Salman felt insulted by Arijit's behaviour, and following this, Arijit’s songs were removed from the actor's films, including Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kick and Sultan.

In 2016, Arijit posted an apology letter for Salman Khan on his Facebook handle, in which he mentioned that even though he tried to apologise several times via text messages or emails, he did not get any response. However, recently, the singer’s car was seen coming out of Salman’s home, and it seems like the two have buried the hatchet.

Arijit Singh’s voice has made people laugh, cry, and fall in love. Despite his superstardom, he is hailed for his humble roots, which is why his popularity is growing.
