Bharti Singh carved a path for herself in an industry where stand-up comedy is categorised as a male-dominated world. Born into adversity, Bharti’s early life was stricken by poverty. She once said, “Ameeri mein comedy ho hi nahi sakti”. Bharti not only took her family out of poverty but also changed her destiny. Bharti Singh’s early life

Born on July 3, 1984, in Amritsar, Punjab, Bharti Singh’s parents were from Punjab, and her father's ancestry was from Nepal. Bharti is the youngest, having two older siblings, a brother and a sister. Bharti’s family was impoverished, and when her mother was expecting her, she faced dire circumstances and even contemplated aborting her.

But God had other plans for Bharti as, despite all the difficulties, her mother decided to give birth to her and shower her with all the love. Bharti Singh is a graduate of the BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar. Not just this, she is a Gold Medalist for Archery and Pistol Shooting.

Tragedy struck when Bharti Singh’s father passed away when she was just two years old. The family of four was left shattered. Bharti doesn’t even remember her father’s face, as there were no pictures of him at their home. At the age of 22, Bhart’s mother had to take responsibility, and she single-handedly raised her three children.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Bharti revealed why her mother never thought of a second marriage and said:

“My mother got married at a very young age of 15 and by the time she was 22, she had three children. My father passed away very early and my mom was left alone with us. So many people suggested my mother to get married again and they got her marriage proposals from men who already had 2 children. But she refused to marry and said that her family will be spilt.”

Bharti Singh’s struggle with poverty and hardships

After her father’s death, Bharti’s mother did all types of work. She worked in factories, cleaned toilets, worked as a maid, and saw all types of hardships. In an interview with Neena Gupta for Brut India, Bharti revealed that her mother would feed them with leftover food given to her from the houses she worked in. Talking about the same, she said:

“Mummy doosron ke ghar kaam karti thi main baithi rehti thi. Toilet saaf karti thi. Phir wo sabzi bachi rehti thi to bolte the le jaana bach gayi hai. Unki baasi sabzi hamari fresh ho jaati thi. Hamara poora din ban jaata tha.”

Bharti Singh’s professional journey

For somebody who has seen hardships in her home, the struggle in her professional life was just a cakewalk. Bharti sought solace by seeking refuge in various auditions and NCC camps. During one of the auditions, comedian, Sudesh Lahiri noticed her talent and cast her in a play. Bharti Singh’s destiny changed when Kapil Sharma recognised her talent and asked her to audition for the show, The Great India Laughter Challenge, where she ended up being the second runner-up.

She achieved critical acclaim for portraying the role 'Lalli', which changed her life forever. The show made her an overnight star and opened the doors for various opportunities. She later appeared in Comedy Circus and hosted Comedy Nights Bachao.

Since then, there has been no looking back for Bharti, who changed the face of comedy with her wit. The ace comedian not only hosted comedy shows but has been a part of various reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, India’s Got Talent, Nach Baliye, The Kapil Sharma Show, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 9, India’s Best Dancer and many others.

Making people laugh is not an easy job as one might be going through a turmoil of emotions, but they still have to display their witty side. The same happens with Bharti as she once recalled how she made people laugh despite her mother being admitted to the ICU. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Bharti Singh shared:

“When I did my first show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, we got a hotel stay sponsored by the show. I and my mother had this habit of eating only home-cooked meals and by consuming hotel food for several days my mother got a stomach ulcer, she was in the ICU and I had to go to my shoot and make people laugh for the semifinals of the show on that day."

Bharti Singh got married to script writer, Haarsh Limbachiyaa in 2017. Bharti never considered dating anyone as she was obese and was conscious about the same. However, it was Haarsh who changed her thoughts. In April 2022, the couple hopped on to parenthood, welcomed their baby boy, and named him Laksh Limbachiyaa.

Bharti Singh and her husband, Haarsh Limbachiyaa, live in an opulent 2BHK flat in Mumbai. She often shares a sneak peek into her cosy home, which is done in pastel hues.
