Chemical peels, as the name suggests, peel off the top layers of skin revealing new skin. These top layers take with them the fine lines, uneven pigmentation, blemishes, and rough skin. It exfoliates and encourages skin to produce collagen. Your skin will be left looking smoother, clearer and younger.

A chemical solution is created after assessing the level of skin damage. It is applied all over the skin area and removed after 15 minutes or maybe even two hours. There are mainly three types of chemical peels: superficial, medium and deep.

The Superficial Path

This is perfect for women in their late 20s or early 30s when the first signs of ageing start showing. It rejuvenates your skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acids are used and this is great for improving the texture of your skin and can also help those with acne. It is used with a bleaching agent in case of uneven skin colour.  You need to keep it on for 20 minutes after which it is wiped out. You may need to have two-three sittings of this for best results. The side effects are minimal.

If you are concerned about fine wrinkles and blemishes, a medium chemical peel which uses trichloraacetic acid would be ideal. This is again for 20 minutes and requires two-three sittings. The side effects are again negligible.

Going Deeper

The deep chemical peel uses carbolic acid, which is nothing but phenol, to treat severe cases of wrinkles and pigmentation.  The procedure can go up to two hours. Unlike, the superficial and medium peels, this is done only once with immediate results. After the peel, you will experience pain and tingling. You may be given pain medication prior to the treatment.  It takes longer to heal, almost three weeks.
