Famous TV news anchor, Chitra Tripathi has finally announced divorce from her husband, Atul Agarwal, after 16 years of their marriage. Here's everything you need to know about it.
Chitra Tripathi is among India's top TV news anchors and is renowned for breaking news in style. However, on March 20, 2025, it was Chitra who broke into the headlines after she dropped a tweet on X (previously known as Twitter) about her married life. The famous news anchor revealed that she has officially parted ways with her husband, Atul Agarwal. For the uninitiated, Atul Agarwal is also an established news anchor and presenter.
The couple ended their marriage after 16 years of togetherness. Chitra Tripathi admitted that she and Atul Agarwal thought about separation some time ago but now felt ready to take the step. However, she ended her note by saying that she and Atul are devoted to raising their son together. The TV journalist asked everyone to send their good wishes on her way as she embarked on a "new journey". An excerpt from her tweet can be read as:
"After 16 wonderful years together, we began a planned separation some time ago and now feel ready to formalize it—not as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family."
Chitra Tripathi and Atul Agarwal have not revealed why they decided to part ways and end their marriage of 16 years. However, something happened in 2022, and people speculate that that particular controversy could be the reason behind the couple's divorce. For the uninitiated, in 2022, reports were rife that Chitra and Atul were reportedly dealing with a series of cracks in their marriage. During that time, Atul dropped a tweet on X in which he tagged the Uttar Pradesh police and shared that some robbers attacked him.
After Atul Agarwal's tweet went viral, Uttar Pradesh police immediately investigated the matter. According to a report in Amar Ujala, Atul lied about the robbery incident, and instead, he was at the residence of one of his female friends. The matter took a completely different turn when it was revealed that the famous news anchor spent a night in OYO. Gossipmongers speculated that Atul was reportedly in OYO with a female, and in order to hide this matter from his wife, Chitra Tripathi, he faked the robbery incident.
In response to the unproved accusations, Atul Agarwa shared that he spent the night alone in the hotel and met his female friend at her residence, where her two sisters were also present. Atul even tagged the girl as his 'sister' and shared that there's nothing between them and that all the rumours about them spending a night in OYO are completely false and extremely insensitive. Soon, the matter was resolved, or we say forgotten in time.
Coming back to Chitra Tripathi's life, she is one of the most famous television news anchors in the Indian media industry. While growing up, Chitra never wanted to become a journalist or work in the media industry, as she always wanted to serve in the Indian Army. For the uninitiated, Chitra completed her schooling from A.D. Govt. Girls Inter College in Gorakhpur. For post-graduation, she took admission to Deen Dayal Upadhyay University and pursued a Master's degree in defence studies.
As an NCC cadet, Chitra Tripathi even received a gold medal during the Republic Day parade in Delhi. However, in a turn of events, during her internship at Doordarshan Center, Chitra fell in love with the process of news making and decided to become a journalist. Fast forward to 2025, and she is currently one of the highest-paid news anchors in the country.
Chitra Tripathi is right up there with leading media personalities like Arnab Goswami, Rajdeep Sardesai, Anjana Om Kashyap, Barkha Dutt, Ravish Kumar, Sudhir Choudhary, Rajat Sharma, and others. Courtesy of her exceptional work in the media industry, she is among India's highest-paid news anchors. It was in 2024 when Chitra joined ABP News in the position of Vice President of news and programming.
Back in that time, reports were rife that Chitra Tripathi reportedly received a huge lucrative offer from ABP News that convinced her to start her second stint with the iconic media house. Apart from being a household face across India, Chitra is also quite famous on social media, as she boasts a massive fan following of 672K followers on Instagram.
