On November 24, 2024, the Maharashtra excise department did not allow permission to serve alcohol at Diljit's Pune concert. This was because of objections from BJP MLA Chandrakant Patil and other parties. The state excise department withdrew permission to serve liquor at the event. Patil revoked serving alcohol to the concert, citing concerns and the impact on the local folks. In a media statement, he said such events did not align with the city’s culture. They would cause significant inconvenience to residents, including noise pollution and traffic congestion. He had also urged the city police commissioner to cancel the event altogether.
The Punjabi singer addressed criticism of his alcohol-centric songs with a bold statement. He said he would stop performing such songs if all alcohol shops were canned in India. It was at his Ahmedabad concert that he addressed a notice he received from the Telangana government, giving him the order not to sing songs referring to drugs, alcohol or violence. He spoke to the audience in Gujarat and noted:
"Good news: I didn’t receive any notice today. Better news: I won’t sing a single alcohol-related song tonight. Ask why? Because Gujarat is a dry state."
Diljit, further revealed he does not drink but felt if all states, declared themselves dry states he would stop singing about alcohol the very next day. He wanted a movement to start where thekas (liquor stores) get closed and he would take the pledge of making songs that have the word alcohol. He even admitted it was easy for him to tweak the lyrics of his songs. Commenting on the economic need of the states in India, that rely on liquor sales, he also noted that liquor has always been a major source of revenue. During the pandemic, everything was shut except the thekas. He felt the youth could not be fooled. Clippings of his remarks have also made waves on social media.
