Popular social media influencer, Dolly Singh revealed how she hopped onto the acting journey and revealed how she overcame the insecurities about her body image.
Dolly Singh is one of the most popular social media influencers in the block currently. She boasts a massive fan following of 1.6 million on Instagram, and another 699K on YouTube. She had kickstarted her career as a content creator for her blog titled, Spill The Sass. However, it was gradually her comic sketches as the character of ‘Raju Ki Mummy’ and imitation of typical ‘South Delhi girls’ which gave her massive fandom. Fast forward to now, the diva made an applaud-worthy performance for the film, Thank You For Coming. And in a recent interview, Dolly reminisced about her journey so far and shared a few anecdotes on the same.
It was in 2020 when Dolly made her silver screen debut with the film, Bhaag Beanie Bhaag. And having crossed so many years now, the diva shared how the seed of acting nurtured within her in the first place. In a recent interview with the Free Press Journal, Dolly recalled manifesting her dream of being an actor from childhood and added how she couldn’t chase them since she was insecure and underconfident. In her words:
“Acting was something I've always manifested since childhood. I loved watching TV and wanted to be inside that box, I was jealous of all the child actors I would see around in shows like Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Just Mohabbat, and Disney shows, but I was also an insecure, underconfident kid. At that time the industry thinking was the heroine had to look a certain way, conventionally extremely beautiful. But nobody wants to play supporting characters in their dreams. I grew up in a realistic way aware of what I could and couldn't do. I thought people would make extra fun of me.”

Well, since Dolly had been doing a few small-scale acting stints within the limits of her social media presence, one might ask if it was easy for her to bag full-time roles in mainstream films. But, on the contrary, Dolly responded that while it was a bit easy in the beginning, since she already knew a few contacts, but it was her performance on-camera that finally counted. Adding how she has been quite stereotyped with the roles offered, Dolly mentioned:
“My transition has been easier than if I was not an influencer trying to act because you make contacts in the industry, know how to get an audition, might work a lot swifter, that's honestly it. In the beginning, it helps because you already know some people from the same circle which might be hard when you're not someone with a big following. There's also the fear of being stereotyped which has happened, like I've played so many best friend roles, blink and miss, and to be able to move away from that has been my action plan. Thank You For Coming was my opportunity to do a significant role, has an arc, and a lot of character depth.
In the concluding segment of the interview, Dolly delved into the topic of body positivity and added how at one point of time, she was quite insecure about her own figure. She revealed constantly reprimanding herself for being ugly and not beautiful. Sharing how she has evolved over time, Dolly confessed:
“Pretending becomes difficult after a point. I was extremely hard on myself growing up. I was in a zone where I would just keep calling myself ugly and not enjoy my physical body, and say bad things to myself. I would like to go back in time and tell her that it's okay, take a break, it's fine, there's nothing really bad about you. This is what people have made you believe.”
