Popular filmmaker, Farah Khan recently shared why she and her brother, Sajid Khan, were considered the 'poor cousins' in their extended family.
Farah Khan is undoubtedly one of the most popular names in the Hindi film industry. While she started out as a choreographer in the early ‘90s, she later switched to direction. She has made some of Bollywood's blockbuster hits, including Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Tees Maar Khan, and more. Despite belonging to a filmy family, Farah’s childhood wasn’t easy, and she had to face a lot of hardships while growing up.
For those unaware, Farah Khan is the daughter of stuntman-turned-producer, Kamran Khan and her mother, Menaka Irani. Thus, the 59-year-old is related to Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar through her mother. While talking to Radio Nasha recently, Farah discussed that she and her brother, Sajid Khan, were considered the ‘poor cousins’ as their father wasn’t as successful as others.

Recalling her childhood, Farah shared that her father lost all his money as his film flopped when she had just turned five. She said that they had a ‘riches to rags’ story and were considered ‘charity cases’ by the rest of the family. After the loss of his entire wealth, Farah’s father resorted to alcohol and passed away when she was just 18. Talking more about her family background, Farah said:
“Yes, I belonged to a filmy family, but by the time I turned five, we were the poor cousins. We’d lost all our money, dad’s film had flopped. We had a riches to rags story. So, they were all rocking, and we were the charity cases. Sajid and me and our mother were the charity cases. But, of course, they were very nice to us. They let us stay in their house.”
Earlier, during an interaction with Maniesh Paul, Farah Khan disclosed when her father passed away, he had just Rs. 30 in his pocket. Further, the filmmaker also revealed that she and her brother struggled to arrange money for their father’s funeral. Farah also added that her brother has shared the same story on Bigg Boss once. In her words:
“The night before, he had played taash (cards) and the only money he had in his pocket was the Rs 30 he had won from those games. Sajid also shared this story on Bigg Boss, explaining how we had to gather funds from various sources to arrange for our father’s funeral.”

Farah Khan’s brother, Sajid Khan, who is also a popular name in the industry, had once opened up about their father. While talking on the Time Out With Ankit YouTube channel, the 53-year-old producer revealed that his father had left making B-grade films after his birth. Sharing that his father decided to make an A-grade movie with Sanjeev Kumar, Sajid said:
“He decided to make an A-grade big film with Sanjeev Kumar. That film never got made. Aadhi picture karke Sanjeev Kumar bhaag gaya. My father lost all his money. Then my father became an alcoholic, and my parents got divorced.”
