Genelia Deshmukh followed a traditional norm when she married Riteish Deshmukh. However, after a month of their marriage, she got irritated and broke down.
Genelia D’Souza is one of the few actresses who managed to win the hearts of not just the Hindi-speaking audience but throughout the South. She is known as the leading South Indian actress of the 2000s, who did some predominant work in Telugu and Tamil films. It was after a Parker Pen commercial with Amitabh Bachchan that Genelia garnered attention.
Soon she began her acting career with the Hindi film, Tujhe Meri Kasam in 2003. Apart from her beauty, it is her bubbly nature that got her much love among the masses. With films like Boys, Masti, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Happy, Force, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya and many more, Genelia proved her versatility.
When Genelia made her acting debut with the film, Tujhe Meri Kasam, it changed not only her professional but also her personal life. During the film's making, she met her future husband, Riteish Deshmukh, for the first time. Despite their different religious backgrounds, the two fell in love and got married.

As Genelia got married to Riteish, who belonged to a traditional Marathi family, the actress thought she was supposed to get dressed in a certain way. She would deck herself up in salwar kameez and heavy jewellery each morning. On the other hand, Riteish wondered why his wife was decked up all the time. It reached a point that Genelia couldn’t handle it and broke down in front of Riteish.
In the show Ladies vs Gentleman season 2, Genelia narrated the whole story. Narrating the story and how she got irritated, the actress said:
“When I got married, I thought it was a norm. Every morning, I would come dressed up and I would get irritated, that why do I have to dress up."
Listening to her, Riteish revealed that even he was confused seeing Genelia in salwar kameez and jewellery and thought there might be some puja. Genelia further continued the story and said that after a month, she broke down and said she couldn't continue like this. In her words:
“One day, I broke down. I said, ‘I can’t do this.’ He was confused, he was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I was like, ‘I can’t dress up like this every day.’ He said, ‘I am also wondering why you are dressing up like this every day!’”
It was in 2002 when Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza met each other at the Hyderabad airport. It was for the test shoot of their debut film, Tujhe Meri Kasam. Genelia had a preconceived notion about Riteish for hailing from an influential political family. But as they say, some things are just meant to be.

During the shoot, the two struck a beautiful friendship, which eventually turned into love. After dating one another for ten years, the two tied the knot on February 3, 2012. The beautiful couple are doting parents to two adorable kids, Riaan and Rahyl.
When Genelia Deshmukh and Riteish Deshmukh appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show, the lovebirds spilled some beans about their relationship. Recalling when he had wanted to pull off a prank on Genelia during their dating days and how it had gone wrong, Riteish said that once he had texted her, they should call off their relationship. Genelia didn’t get his April Fool's Day prank and took it so seriously that Riteish vowed never to joke with her about such matters.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Genelia revealed the secret of her happy marriage with Riteish. Giving credit to her hubby, she shared:
“I have to complement Riteish for that because he doesn’t make any issue. We don’t fight, we only fight when I want to fight. He won’t get into the nitty-gritty of issues, sometimes I feel I want that to happen because I am a different person. But he lets me be. I think in all of that, we found the rhythm of communication.”
She also revealed that during the initial phase of their relationship, they had refrained from communicating openly with each other, but later, she didn’t want that to happen. She shared that knowing why one is upset had helped them strengthen their relationship. She further shared that they keep their kids involved in their lives and love travelling together.
Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh have proved that love is the only ingredient for a happy marriage. Despite their different religious beliefs and family background, they began their forever journey and are going strong even after so many years.
