Guru Dutt's Biopic, 'Pyasa' Will Disclose Whether He Committed Suicide For Waheeda Rehman Or Not?

Legendary filmmaker and actor, Guru Dutt's upcoming biopic, 'Pyasa' will throw light on his struggle with depression and the cause of his suicide according to a lot of reports. Find out!

Some people call him one of the greatest directors of all-time, some call him an exceptional actor, but everyone agrees with the fact that he was and will always be a prominent name in Indian film history because of his films and real-life. On May 26, 1953, Guru Dutt had tied the knot with one of the most popular singers of that era, Geeta Roy, whom he had met during the shoot of the film, Baazi. Soon, the couple had three beautiful children namely, Tarun Dutt, Arun Dutt and Nina Dutt. However, by 1950's the news of Guru Dutt being romantically involved with actress, Waheeda Rehman had started doing rounds on newspapers. The financial issues had also peaked up and the actor had to vacate his bungalow. It is said that towards the end of his life, even Waheeda had distanced herself from him, owing to his alcoholism, anxiety and depression attacks. After which, on October 10, 1964, Dutt sahab's suicidal death had shocked the entire nation. According to a report by ETimes, a source close to the film's scriptwriters has told them that the film is going to unfold all the decade-long questions in the heart of every Indian regarding his depression and suicide. The source stated, "While doing her research, Bhavna spoke to a few people who worked with him and found out that he was not unhappy with his professional or personal life. While there have been speculations for years that he committed suicide (ended his life) because of his love for Waheeda Rehman, but it is not the truth. According to an actor who worked in Guru Dutt's films, he had moved on in life and was not in an unhappy space at all."

The source continued and revealed that back in those days, mental illness was not a topic to be vocal about, and it had played a big role in his decision of ending his life. The source further added, "In all probability, he was severely depressed, and because in those times, these things were not spoken a lot or understood by common people, no one, not even Dutt himself came to terms with the fact that he was depressed. His severe depression made him choose such a harsh step that resulted in a tragic end to a legend's life." Talking about Guru Dutt's upcoming biopic, then it's going to be directed by Bhavna Talwar, a critically acclaimed director, who had received National Film Award for her debut film, Dharm in 2007. On July 29, 2020, Bhavna had taken to her Twitter handle and had posted two pictures of Guru Dutt's biopic, Pyasa's script. The title of the film is taken from the legendary director's iconic 1957 drama by the same name. Along with those pictures, Bhavna had written a few lines, and it could be read as "Now that the cat's out of the bag! Can't wait to get down to this one after seven years of toil and immeasurable joy."

Well, the young director has strong backing from Guru Dutt's family as his niece and filmmaker, Kalpana Lajmi had talked about the same in an interview with the Hindustan Times. She had stated, "Why should I threaten to go legal if Bhavna Talwar makes a biopic on my uncle? I don't know how or where these reports originated. Bhavna is a very fine filmmaker.
