In a recent interview, Hema Malini opened up about how she wasn't convinced to play the role of a mother of four in the film, 'Baghban'. Here's how her mother convinced her!
Veteran actress, Hema Malini was one of the leading actresses of her time, and every other director wanted to work with her. However, the actress was quite picky about signing films, and she would often consult her mother, late Jaya Chakravarti, before saying 'Yes' to a film. Hema was in her early 50s when she was offered the lead role in the film, Baghban, opposite Amitabh Bachchan, but she wasn't keen on doing the film.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Hema Malini opened up about signing the film, Baghban, opposite Amitabh Bachchan, which went on to become a box-office success. Talking about the same, the actress said that she wasn't initially convinced to play a ‘mother of four’ in the family drama. She recalled that when the director, Ravi Chopra, told her the storyline of the film, she immediately made up her mind that she would not sign the film. She said:
“I remember when I was hearing the story from Ravi Chopra, my mother was sitting. After he left, I said, ‘Chaar itne bade bade ladka ki maa ka role karne ko bol raha hai. How can I do this'."

However, as soon as Ravi left, Hema turned to her mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, and told her that she couldn't play the role of a mother of four sons in the movie. But the actress' mother convinced her to sign the film and told her that the story was very good and the role was very nice. Revealing why she was hesitant about signing the film, Hema shared:
"But my mother said, 'No no no, you must do it!' I said, ‘Why?’ ‘No, the story is very good. You must do it.’ How she was after me. I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it.' But before that I felt… See, before that, I wasn't doing films. After a long gap, I was working. So I thought, ‘Why should I do this?’ But she said, ‘No, you must do this. The role is very nice.’"
Further in the interview, Hema Malini revealed that she was also offered the film, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, but her mother asked her not to do it. However, later, Zeenat Aman was roped in as the lead in the 1978 romantic film directed by Raj Kapoor. For the unversed, the film also starred Shashi Kapoor and Padmini Kolahpure, and it was produced by RK Studio. Hema said:
“Raj Kapoor came to me and asked me to do Satyam Shivam Sundaram. But he only said, ‘This is such a film and I don’t feel you would do it. But I am very keen that you should do it. But I know you will not do it.' So my mother is also sitting and says, ‘No, she will not do all that’."
