In a recent interview, Yo Yo Honey Singh got candid about his personal life and revealed how his addiction heavily distanced him from his family.
Sensational singer and rapper, Honey Singh’s personal life came under the limelight after his ex-wife, Shalini Talwar, accused him of domestic violence and various other offences. The duo even filed for divorce in September 2022, under which Singh had to pay a hefty alimony to Shalini of Rs. 1 crore. Their divorce case was settled on November 7, 2023. While the singer has signed an MOU not to discuss his divorce publicly, he has now briefly admitted to neglecting his ex-wife.
Honey Singh tied the knot with Shalini Talwar on January 23, 2011. In an interview with The Lallantop, the singer revealed that the initial 9-10 months of their marriage were good, but his success and addiction pushed him away from his family. He also admitted that he did terrible things back then, almost leaving and forgetting Shalini. In his words:
"Our relationship wasn't very good at that time. There was distance between us because I was travelling a lot. For the initial 9–10 months of our marriage, things were good. But then success and fame got to my head. When that happened, I neglected my family and had completely lost myself in money, fame, addiction, and women. I did terrible things. I almost left Shalini and forgot about them (family)."
In the same conversation, the Blue Eyes singer was asked about the person who introduced him to substance, and he revealed that some ‘big and influential names’ had teased him. Honey Singh added that he was so addicted to substances that he remained high most of the time. Honey said:
"Few names, few very big and influential names. They had teased me. I was so badly addicted to these substances that I was always high. Most of the time, I was unaware of myself and my surroundings."
Honey Singh further revealed that he never required rehabilitation to overcome his addictions. When he finally decided to quit all kinds of substances, he informed his family about his deteriorating mental health. He needed immediate medical attention, so he prioritised his health over work and went MIA for seven long years until he recovered completely. The singer said:
"I emphasised that I never required rehabilitation to overcome my addictions. I had quit liquor, hashish, and other substances, informing my family about the mental health issues that demanded immediate attention and treatment. My family warned me about potential legal repercussions from international law firms due to my demanding schedule, but I prioritised my health and refused to work until I received proper care. The recovery process took seven long years."
Honey Singh is currently promoting his latest album, Glory, a documentary about his glorious and controversial life. In the same interview, he also recalled how he returned from America with severe symptoms. He added that he broke down during a taping of his own show, India's Raw Star, and left abruptly. Honey Singh said:
"During a tour with Shah Rukh Khan in America, I returned with severe symptoms. Despite being involved in my own show, 'India's Raw Star,' in Mumbai, I remember breaking down during a taping and leaving abruptly. I retreated to my home in Noida for a period of time."
