How To Quit Smoking Before Wedding

So, your wedding is just a month away and you desperately want to quit smoking, what do you do? And plus your friends have been politely reminding you of this and the smoking habit you have harboured over the years.

This, by far, is the most excruciatingly painful (yet good) kind of test you put yourself through, regardless of the fact, if your fiancé is a smoker or not.

The trouble is the starting point. Because, as people say, smoking has all the ingredients to spoil quite a number of things, as well as your relationship with your spouse. For example, your romantic evenings, your dinner dates and even when you have a family get-together. The craving can be extremely frustrating and difficult to contain.

Nonetheless, when you got to go, you got to go. Here are a few things you can get started with.

We know, it sounds pretty dramatic when your smoker buddies come and tell you that one fine morning, while smoking, they just had a divine intervention and quit smoking just like that. Unbelievable, but yes, there are people who have quit smoking in the spur of the moment, and have been successful too. But, you firstly need to understand if you have that level of determination and dedication and whatever else it takes in this gruelling task. There's no point getting carried away.

Now, get practical with solutions 

If you have tried but could never quit because you experienced increased frustration, fatigue and trouble sleeping, remember that these symptoms last only for a few days. The key to overcome the withdrawal symptons and your cravings is to keep your sugar levels higher than you normally do. For example, you can drink a greater quantity of juice.

The one-a-day method 

If you have realised quitting is getting tough, reduce one cigarette each day from the total that you have every day. And if you are in a habit of buying an entire pack, stop doing that immediately, instead buy loose cigarettes. If possible, buy one whenever you feel like smoking. It's a simple logic here. If you have cigarettes lying in a pack, the consumption goes up invariably and if you don't have any, we know you will smoke anyway, but at least, you will postpone it (since you have to go and buy). 

Entertain yourself, talk to a colleague or munch healthy

This might sound preachy but this works. Whenever the craving hits you, focus on any stuff but anything remotely closed to nicotine. If you are working and the urge hits you, take a round, or have some juice or munch on something healthy. It's just those 10 minutes that are tough, once you consciously make it a point to divert your mind off smoking, you will notice a difference.

Try a sport or follow your passion

Some like gymming, some love singing, some love playing an instrument or probably play tennis, everyone has this little passion hidden somewhere. And pretty often, we blame it on time, but we secretly wish we could pursue it. Here's the chance. The best way to take your mind off smoking is doing you what you love the most. This sure is one of the best ways to get started. 

Let your social smoker friends know

If you are surrounded by friends or family who smoke, you might just never give up smoking. Telling everyone around you about your decision is the first step for it may call for a change of behaviour on their part too.

When your determination goes for a toss, go for medication 

When you feel, neither do you have the unbending dedication required nor the patience, talk to your doctor about anti-smoking medication and the best option for you. Nicotine gum or patches are used in nicotine replacement therapy to replace cigarettes with these nicotine substitutes. There are certain anti-smoking pills which are intended for short term use. However, you need to consult your doctor before you use them.

What goes around, comes around; stay put

You might encounter relapses while you are trying to kick the habit. It is common when one tries to replace older, unwanted habits with newer and healthy ones. Don’t let setbacks affect you. Remember that most people “try” to quit several times before they quit smoking for good. Use your experience to find triggers and other trouble spots so you can use it to follow a new and improved plan. 

We know smoking can be hard and even harder to give up. But as long as you have made up your mind to overcome this, you have already set course for the right journey.
