You want your wedding lehenga to be exclusive and perfect; but that does not mean you have to pay an astronomical amount for it. Many brides, often, end up buying heavily embellished lehengas, which cannot be used anywhere else. They look at the designer’s name; not the design, silhouette or the versatility of the outfit. Let us have a look at factors you should and should not consider while purchasing one.

Set a budget

It is very easy to go overboard when you don’t have a specific budget in mind. Designers charge anything from Rs. 20,000 to a couple of lakhs for a wedding lehenga. So, it is important to set the amount, to know what you can afford without breaking your wedding budget.

Choose your designer carefully

Many brides-to-be often choose a designer who is well-known or featured in bridal magazines. Remember, their garments are going to be overpriced, because of the name attached.

So, try to discover some little known designers or showrooms. This way you can find great lehengas at fraction of the price. Spend a couple of days exploring different designer boutiques in your city. Remember that such designers are always more open to suggestions and customisation of lehengas, at a reasonable price.

Exclusivity

Exclusivity is one factor that makes brides pay an exorbitant amount. But what guarantee do you have that a famous designer will not have a similar piece stocked in another store. So, instead of running behind exclusivity look at the quality of the lehenga. Is the fabric comfortable for you? Does it fit your body like a dream? Does the lehenga overwhelm you or does it accentuate your overall look? You should ask these questions to yourself, as you try out various lehengas.

Design

Designer lehengas often end up costing more because of their expensive embellishments. Swarovski crystals, real gold and silver thread and semi-precious stones are a few things designers use to hike the price of their garment. Do not fall for such gimmicks; opt for a lehenga which looks good on you, in your budget. Delicate thread embroidery and artificial stones, if used well, can make your lehenga stand out, too.

Weighty issues

Many a time, designers cram every possible type of embroidery and work into a lehenga. You may have heard of brides wearing a 35 kg lehenga, which cost them over lakhs. Don’t go for a garish, heavy piece just because it is expensive. Keep your comfort factor in mind. On your wedding day, you would want to look serene and happy, not irritable and tired.

Even if your choli and lehenga are heavy, then go for a simple dupatta. Don’t overdo things just because a designer tells you so. Think about your own style and comfort, first.

Become a designer

If you have an innate sense of fashion and style, why not design your own lehenga. Look for a fashion student who can bring your design to paper. Hire a good tailor and skilled craftsmen. Buy your own fabric and embellishments; and create a beautiful piece. It would reflect your personal style statement. Ask your close friends and family for opinions. But in the end, always follow your own instinct.

We know this will be a slightly tedious process. But, here you wouldn’t have to worry about exclusivity and budget, because both will be in your hand always.

In the end, the size of your budget depends on you alone. But never get carried away with a designer name. Think practically and buy something that you will truly cherish.
