Vijay Varma's recently released web series, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, is receiving much love and appreciation from the masses for its content and the cast members' outstanding acting. The story revolves around the 1999 hijack incident where one person named Rupin Katyal, was brutally killed. However, his wife, Rachna Katyal, did not know about his demise even after his kriya karam, and her reaction to his death was heart-wrenching.
The Indian Airlines Flight IC814 was hijacked on December 24, 1999, by five Pakistani terrorists and Rupin Katyal was brutally murdered by them. It so happened that after the hijack, the terrorists took a few passengers to the business class and killed Rupin to set an example for the others to behave. However, all this while, his wife, Rachna, was not aware of his death. The passengers were held hostage for a week, and even after their return, Rachna was not aware of Rupin's death.
As soon as Rachna landed back, her father-in-law told her that Rupin was in the hospital and took her home. She had not even seen her husband's kriya karam as her family did not want to scar her for life. She was informed about his death much later when, with each passing day, she was 'becoming hysteric' and kept on asking her in-laws about Rupin. Recalling the moment, in an interaction, Rachna said:
"It was only when I repeatedly kept asking for Rupin, and they could avoid it no longer that I was finally told the truth. I think I was becoming hysterical, so my father-in-law finally pointed to a large photograph of Rupin and brokenly told me, "That is your Rupin. That is all that we have of him."
Rachna and Rupin had an arranged marriage set by their families. They tied the knot on December 3, 1999, and on December 24, 1999, Rupin was brutally murdered by the terrorists. The couple was returning from their honeymoon when the gruesome incident took place, which changed their lives forever. Talking about her marriage with Rupin, Rachna added:
"I met Rupin and liked him immediately. He was very easy to get along with, and we went out together a few times before we actually got married on December 3, 1999."
Rachna's father-in-law, a pillar of support, adopted her after Rupin's death. He not only secured a job for her in the personnel department of Indian Airlines but also remarried her In 2002. Her in-laws did her kanyadaan, and she welcomed her first child into the world after a few years. Her in-laws' unwavering support and love made this journey possible.
