Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt are two of the most popular actresses in Bollywood. Both excel at their skills and have built a massive fan following for themselves. They have not only shared the same co-stars but have also worked with the same directors, one of whom was filmmaker, Imtiaz Ali. And a statement by the latter has left the internet in splits.
Imtiaz Ali directed several actors, such as Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, and others, in his films. In a recent interview with Komal Nahta for his podcast Game Changers, the director answered several questions, including the one which required him to choose between Alia and Deepika. However, soon after he made his decision and picked Alia, an old video of Deepika claiming to be Imtiaz’s favourite resurfaced online.
During the rapid-fire round of the podcast, Imtiaz Ali was asked to choose between the two phenomenal actresses, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt. Imtiaz chose the latter, which led the netizens to dig into an old video of Deepika. A video surfaced on the discussion platform, Reddit.
The video showed that she and Imtiaz were each other's favourites. However, what was even more interesting was the fact that Alia was also present during the interview by Film Companion. Deepika was quoted as saying:
"Imtiaz wrote Cocktail, but he directed Tamasha. We are each other’s favourites."
The video was shared by a Reddit user with the caption, "Imtiaz really gave her a reality check." The netizens called out Deepika's delusion about being Imtiaz's favourite. A user penned, "Uff dard." Another commented, "Ohh shizz, dukh dard peedha." A comment read, "He could have waited a second to respond. That was way too quick." A Redditor stated, "Oops, Deepu… ultimate betrayal." Another commenter wrote, "Khel gaye Imtiaz sir!! All I can relate is to 'kal anna kaal.'" A user in a long post said:
"Remember that it’s all in her head. No, but honestly, I don’t think Deepika has any true friends in the industry. Alia is socially smarter."
However, some fans defended Deepika. A user wrote, "I love how someone waited for years for his answer to change just to make this edit. He picked Deepika for the same question during his Koffee with Karan appearance. Maybe Alia’s recent performances made him appreciate her more. What a petty post." Another commented, "Actually, Deepika is being generous when she says he’s also her favourite. Tamasha was a bad movie about a man-child needing to be fixed by someone. These directors and actors keep changing their favourites based on the current trend—there’s no real loyalty."

Deepika Padukone has worked with Imtiaz in two films. Her first project was Love Aaj Kal alongside Saif Ali Khan and Tamasha co-starring, Ranbir Kapoor. She also starred in Cocktail, which was written by Imtiaz. Alia Bhatt, on the other hand, has worked with Imtiaz in Highway.
