Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan's first home, Prateeksha, is a royal space that the couple gifted to their daughter, Shweta Bachchan. Let us take a sneak peek inside.
The Bachchans are one of the most prominent names in the entertainment world. Beginning from Harivansh Rai Bachchan, an acclaimed Hindi poet, his wife, Teji Bachchan, a social activist, and their son and daughter-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, every member a renowned name. Just like Amitabh Bachchan’s professional life, the actor enjoys a luxurious life and has several properties in Mumbai, including his homes, Jalsa, Prateeksha, and Janak.
Although the veteran actor has many properties to his name, his bungalow, Prateeksha, holds a special place in his life as it was his first home in Mumbai. In 2024, Amitabh Bachchan gifted his first-ever home, Prateeksha, worth Rs. 50.63 crores, to his daughter, Shweta Bachchan. As per a report published in the Economic Times, the transfer of ownership was formalised through two distinct gift deeds. Today, let us take you on an inside tour and give you a glimpse of the interiors of the Bachchan home.
Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow, Prateeksha, boasts a huge lawn with a lush green garden and tall trees. We have often seen Amitabh Bachchan posting pictures of his huge garden, either reading his morning newspaper or playing with his dog, Shanouk. The huge lawn of Prateeksha is synonymous with the grandeur of the abode.
Every house has a unique story of its own, and the same goes for Amitabh Bachchan’s Prateeksha. Amitabh has planted many trees in his home, but the Gulmohar tree that the actor planted 48 years ago is quite special. In 2020, Amitabh Bachchan posted a picture collage of the same Gulmohar tree, which was uprooted during the rains.
However, the veteran actor replanted it on his mother, Teji Bachchan’s birth anniversary. Narrating the story behind the Gulmohar tree, Amitabh penned:
““Jo base hain wo ujadte hain, pragati ke jad niyam se. Par kisi ujade hue ko, phir basaana kab mana hai? Andheri raat par diya jalaana kab mana hai?” This large ‘gulmohar’ tree was planted as a sapling by me when we got our first house Prateeksha in 1976... the recent storm brought it down... but yesterday on my Mother’s birthday Aug 12th I replanted a fresh new Gulmohar tree in her name… at the same spot!”
Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow, Prateeksha, has a huge entrance. It is the same place from where the veteran actor used to address his fans. With a tan-coloured gate, the bungalow's entrance also gives a glimpse of the entire multi-storey house.
The living room of the house is done in pastel hues with wooden aesthetics. The huge grey-coloured sofa is also seated in the living room. With indoor plants, the room spreads a calmness. In another picture, we could also see a huge painting on the wall with some traditional eye-catching interiors.
Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai’s 2007 wedding was an intimate affair. It took place in the Bachchan clan’s iconic residence, Prateeksha. A huge wedding mandap and a South Indian setup were created. The couple took their wedding vows and performed all the rituals and ceremonies in Prateeksha. In addition, a scene from Anurag Kashyap’s film, Bombay Talkies, was shot in Prateeksha.
There is an interesting story behind the naming of Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow, Prateeksha. In an episode of the reality show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, Mr Bachchan revealed that his bungalow Prateeksha was named by his father, veteran poet, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Talking about the same, the actor said:
“Babuji saw the house as we invited him and Maa Ji to now live with us and named it, Prateeksha... It came from a line of one of his works: “Swagat sabke liye yaha par, nahi kisi ke liye prateeksha”.”
