Once in a generation, an actor comes, who creates a connection. A connection between the character he plays and the emotions of the audience. We cry, we laugh, we get hurt, we become happy with the character, and it doesn't feel 'not' real at any point. Very few actors can create this magical illusion on screen and the late legend, Irrfan Khan was one of those. On April 30, 2020, we had lost this gem to a colon infection, and we still haven't come to terms with the irreparable loss. Irrfan Khan's son, Babil keeps posting throwback pictures and videos of the actor to keep his memories alive. On October 22, 2020, Babil had shared a beautiful video of his baba singing Mera Saaya Saath Hoga for his mother, Sutapa Sikdar. The video was from the sets of Irrfan's last movie, Angrezi Medium and the couple had looked utterly happy in each other's arms as they had given wide smiles for the camera while walking on the road.
It was Irrfan Khan's birthday on January 7, 2021, and his doting wife, Sutapa Sikdar penned a long note throwing light on different aspects of his life. Starting her long note with a shayari, Sutapa talked about how Irrfan never celebrated his birthday to her utter dismay. She wrote, "Na muh chhupa ke jiye ham na sar jhuka ke jiye, sitamgaron ki nazar se nazar mila ke jiye, ab ek raat agar kam jiye to kam hi sahi, yahi bahut hai ki ham mish alenjala ke jiye. You never celebrated your birthday initially to my dismay then reconciliation then just a habit. You used to ask me when you were really young “why would you celebrate your birthday isn’t it one year less to your death day?” of course these were conversation when you had just ventured out from home from conditioning to exploration so you would question everything. I don’t remember what I answered you but today I want to answer so listen Irrfan I celebrate the day because how would I have met you if you were not born ..so I celebrate the day the nakshatras the tithi the grahas the alignment of the universe on that particular day which welcomed you in this planet. And now that you are in the infinite did you get some answers you always seeked? "
Sutapa then talked about his absence and the fact that his city, 'Bombay' never sleeps. Her note can be further read as "Dark nights dim lights and sahir saab’s shayari would float in the air..some nights when the sleep finally would decide after one or two momentary yawns to hide behind the star so one star gazes and looks for sleep quietly. You are silent from within, it’s a long days end and last three years have really been with longest days .you are tired with incessant noise of anxiety worry curiosity etc etc ..you just stare at the dark night with occasional horns just enough to remind you that you are earth bound. Yes bombay never sleeps..sometimes so don’t you. I celebrate your birthday as I would not meet you if you weren’t born." Irrfan Khan's son, Babil had also taken to his IG handle and had shared an unseen video of his baba, Irrfan Khan, where the family was seen face timing with him. Along with the video, Babil had written, “You never identified with institutions such as contractual marriage and birthday celebrations. Perhaps, that is why I don’t remember anyone’s birthdays because you never remembered mine and never encouraged me to remember yours. It was just normal to us what seemed absurd from the outside, we celebrated everyday (bringing personal experiential authenticity to the cliche). On the occasion, Mamma would have to remind us both; but this time I could not forget yours if I tried. It’s your birthday Baba. Shoutout to all the technologically inept parents, notice that they did not finish saying that they miss me.”
On November 9, 2020, Babil Khan had shared an unseen picture of his parents in each other's warm embrace and had penned a heart-melting poem in the caption. His caption could be read as "It's true, time does indeed slow down in the spaces between your breaths. And once you've dreamed of more, how could you settle for less. Perhaps, it was over because you knew. Or perhaps, because I grew. But the sky isn't so blue, when the sun is setting over you."
