Ishaan Khatter opened up about his bonding with half-brother, Shahid Kapoor and revealed how their love for one another is not expressed frequently but understood.
Ishaan Khatter made his big Bollywood debut with the film, Beyond The Clouds by Majid Majidi, which fetched him the Filmfare Award For Best Debut Male that year. Thereafter, he made an applaud-worthy performance in the film, Dhadak, opposite Janhvi Kapoor, which made him an instant sensation among the audience. Speaking about his personal life, Ishaan is the son of ex-couple, Neelima Azeem and Rajesh Khatter, and is the half-brother of Shahid Kapoor.
In an interview with News18 Showsha, Ishaan Khatter candidly spoke about his relationship with brother, Shahid Kapoor. He recalled how the latter was quite nervous when he was about to make his debut with Beyond The Clouds. However, Ishaan recalled feeling proud to show his debut film post release to his family, and called it a big moment. In his words:
“I have had many many years of watching him from the wings and learning from him, vicariously. But, when I started acting, when my first film, Beyond the Clouds, released, it was a very big moment to share with my family, especially my brother and my mother. Something very beautiful started at that moment when I was born as an actor in front of him. If I can speak for him here, I think he was more nervous about the film than I was. You can prepare, work and learn as much as you can but this is a kind of profession where, till you see it, you don’t know.”

Speaking more about the topic, Ishaan then revealed how it is very difficult for him as he feels quite nervous living up to the expectations of his identity as Shahid Kapoor’s brother. He mentioned that Shahid was apprehensive about people claiming that his little brother didn’t get the acting chops at all. Nevertheless, he added how things changed post the release of his debut film. He mentioned:
“The nervousness stemmed from the fact that I am his Chota Bhai – the personal attachment is such. He thought, ‘Will I have to come to terms with the fact that he has not got the acting chops?’ But I think he was very relieved when he saw Beyond the Clouds. Something very beautiful started that day – we started feeding off each other’s creative energies.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Ishaan mentioned that both he and his brother, Shahid Kapoor are not much into PDA or over-expression of their love and care towards one another. Instead, he highlighted that their bonding is more understood than said. Ishaan revealed:
“It’s a beautiful thing, even we don’t talk about it too much. But, we both know that it’s there. He has been like a mentor – someone I’ve learnt a lot from. We are lucky to have each other.”
