Javed Akhtar claimed that marriage is useless, and added that he is hardly married to Shabana Azmi. For the unversed, it was second marriage of Javed Akhatar.
Javed Akhtar is a name synonymous with romantic love songs. He is one of the famous lyricists who brought the magic of love to films with his words. While we all know about his professional accolades, not many know that he is a romantic at heart, and fell madly in love with Shabana Azmi while he was already married to Honey Irani and had kids. Now, in a shocking new statement, Javed Akhtar revealed he is hardly married to her.
Shabana and Javed got married in 1984 under strange circumstances, when he was still married to his first wife, Honey Irani. Appearing on Barkha Dutt's Mojo Story, Javed Akhtar talked about his relationship with his second wife, Shabana, and stated that he is hardly married to her.
Clearing his stance about the same, Javed Akhtar added that they are more of friends. He shared that his only qualification for a good marriage is that if they are friends or not. Javed Akhtar also called marraige a useless affair. He was quoted as saying:
"Actually, we are hardly married. We are friends. My only qualification for a good marriage is this: are you friends or are you not? Shaadi-waadi toh bekaar kaam hai. It’s a centuries old tradition, it’s a stone that has been rolled down mountains for centuries. And as it was coming down the hill, it has collected a lot of moss, a lot of garbage and muck…"
Javed Akhtar revealed that the words, 'husband' and 'wife' have so many different meanings. He added that two people need mutual respect, mutual consideration to make it work. He was quoted as saying:
"We have to understand that the other person is a human being, with their own ambitions and dreams. They have just as much of a right over their ambitions as I have over mine. That’s all. It isn’t rocket science. It’s actually quite simple. You can only live happily together if both of you are happy."
Earlier, in his Prime Video documentary, Javed Akhtar expressed his guilt towards his first wife, Honey Irani. He added that he had caused a lot of hurt to his first wife, Honey when he started getting involved with Shabana. He added that he can take sixty-seventy percent responsibilites on his shoulder for the failure of his first marraige with Honey Irani. He said:
"Honey is one person in the world, towards whom I feel guilty. And she is the only person. Sixty-seventy percent responsibility lies on my shoulders, for the failure of that marriage. If I had as much understanding as I have today, perhaps things would not have gone wrong. It is very difficult to accept, but that’s how it is."
