Known for her strong and bold views, Jaya Bachchan opened up on her perspective of Indian women wearing western clothes.
One of the most popular actresses from yesteryear, Jaya Bachchan, is also known to be quite vocal about putting forward her opinions and feedback out to the world. Wife of legendary actor, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya hits the headlines in no time, with her sharp tongue and clarity of words.
Apart from her acting career, she is also an active parliamentarian, who voices her bold opinions fearlessly. In addition, she is a strong feminist and never shies away or fears from exposing the right and the wrong out in the society.

In the recent podcast episode of her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, What The Hell Navya, Jaya spoke her heart out on Indian women who have, over time, evolved to prefer wearing western clothes to their own Indian clothes. She questioned Indian women wearing more of western wear and said:
“I feel very unknowingly we have accepted that the western clothing gives that man-power to a woman. I would love to see a woman in woman power. I am not saying, ‘go wear a saree’. But in the west also, women used to dress in dresses. This whole thing changed much later when they started wearing pants.”

To this response, Jaya’s daughter, Shweta Bachchan, who also happens to be a part of the podcast explained the reason why women choose such a choice. She mentioned that it is because it offers them a certain kind of mobility and movement to carry out their work more easily. In her words:
“It is because of ease of movement. A lot of women today are not just at home, they are going out, they are getting jobs. It is easier to pull on a pair of pants and a t-shirt than it is to maybe drape a saree.”
This is not the first time when Jaya Bachchan has shared her progressive thinking and views on her granddaughter’s podcast show. For instance, in one of the previous episodes of the same podcast, What The Hell Navya, Jaya spoke about her take on modern love. She revealed that she would be open minded if Navya as her granddaughter would stay in a live-in relationship and get pregnant with a child even before marriage. In her words:
“I'm looking at it very clinically. Since there's a lack of that emotion, the romance today, I think you should marry your best friend. You should have a good friend, you should discuss and say, ‘Maybe I'd like to have a child with you because I like you, I think you're nice, so let's get married because that's what society's saying'. I have no problem if you have a child without a marriage also, I really don't have a problem.”
