Television actress, Ulka Gupta opened up about her journey in the entertainment industry and revealed that she lost many roles because of her skin tone.
Ulka Gupta is one of the most talented actresses in the entertainment industry. She has worked in television as well as in Hindi and Telugu film. The actress made her acting debut with a Telugu film, Andhra Pori. However, Ulka gained overnight popularity after playing the role of 'Rani Lakshmi Bai' in the serial, Jhansi Ki Rani. Recently, the actress opened up about her acting career and shed light on her journey in the entertainment industry.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Ulka Gupta opened up about her journey in the entertainment industry and revealed how she lost jobs because of her skin colour. The actress mentioned that earlier, dusky-skin people were considered to be rural people. Stating how even after working in a successful serial like Jhansi Ki Rani, she was still categorized according to her skin colour. In her words:
"I sure did lose jobs, and over the years I have mentioned that back in the day, dusky skin people would attribute to rural-looking people, and that was basic, and the fair ones were the up-market ones. I still don't understand where that notion comes from. Regardless, even after Jhansi Ki Rani and becoming a name, I was still categorized under the dusky skin type."

Further, in the same interview, Ulka mentioned that she is proud of her body and skin. The actress also stated that she doesn't need society to tell her to apply facial packs to get a fair skin colour. Talking about how channels turned her down because of her dusky skin tone, Ulka said that she was never considered the 'heroine' type, even in the Telugu film industry.
In the same interview, Ulka thanked popular Bollywood actresses like Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone and others for breaking down the societal stereotype and notion about dusky skin people. She also opened up about body types and how makers restrict actresses to certain categories. Stating how the categorization will end once the audience starts asking for stories that are relevant to everyone, Ulka said:
"I thank people like Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra who've broken the notion when it comes to dusky skin tones. Then you talk about bodies, like curvy bodies, and tall women, I am not restricting myself to a certain category but it's the makers who will have to choose stories that are relevant to everyone. I think that will only happen when the audience starts supporting and asking for it."
Ulka is one such actress who never shies away from speaking her mind. In the interview, the actress opened up about turning down fairness cream endorsements. However, she also mentioned that the craze for white skin is still there in tier 2 and 3 cities. Taking a dig at the fairness cream brands, Ulka said that she will not support them, and their existence irritates her to the core.

For the unversed, Ulka Gupta became a household name after working in the popular serial, Jhansi Ki Rani. Later, she went on to work in several TV shows like Banni Chow Home Delivery, Saat Phere: Saloni Ka Safar, Odh-Maitritil Avyakt Bhavna, and many more. The actress has even worked in Rohit Shetty's film, Simmba.
