Kangana Ranaut recently shared in an interview that she felt the titular role played by Deepika Padukone in 'Padmaavat' was irrelevant, and netizens couldn't agree more.
Kangana Ranaut is known for her exceptional acting skills, straightforward personality, and fearlessness. She has never shied away from sharing her honest experiences in Bollywood, and it often leads to major controversies in the industry. At the same time, the actress has been selective in choosing her projects and in a recent interview she discussed the same. Kangana revealed that she has received several significant offers from the industry in the past few years. However, the stereotypical and one-dimensional roles have prevented her from saying 'Yes' to them.
Kangana Ranaut, who is busy promoting her newly released film, Emergency, sat down for an interview with Ajeet Bharti. During the conversation, she revealed that she was offered the titular role of 'Rani Padmavati' in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat. However, when she asked the filmmaker for the film's script to understand it thoroughly, he refused to share it. Kangana mentioned that the filmmaker claimed he never shared his scripts and rather verbally explained to her about the female lead character in the film. Talking about the same, the actress revealed:
“Kehte hain ‘heroine ka role sirf itna hai wo usko pehli baar mirror mein dekhta hai, aur wo taiyaar ho rahi rehti hai.’
Kangana felt the role didn't have much for her to do and turned down the opportunity in that big-budget film. Later, when she watched the historical drama film released in 2018, she realised that Deepika Padukone's role was exactly similar to the filmmaker's brief. The actress saw that Deepika was only getting ready in the whole film. Consequently, she questioned the interviewer, asking, after this experience, whom she should work with. She said:
“Aur jab maine film dekhi, wo saari film mein taiyaar hi ho rahi hoti hai. And he was right. Wo sirf taiyaar ho rahi hoti hai."
Kangana Ranaut's significant comment about Deepika and her role in Padmaavat immediately went viral, igniting a new debate on Reddit. Several netizens were quick to share their views, and one user wrote, "I mean, she is actually not wrong. Aside from the last scene, Deepika pretty much only spent the entire movie getting dressed and exchanging looks with Shahid." Another netizen commented, "Now I am really thinking about the movie and realised that she was portrayed as a trophy that the villain wanted to achieve. "
After multiple delays, Kangana Ranaut returned to the screen with her new film, Emergency, released on January 17, 2025. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Satish Kaushik in key roles. She has not confirmed any further projects but admitted that the scripts of her iconic films, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Queen are in the pipeline.
