Former Indian cricketer, Kapil Dev shared how his family responded after seeing Deepika Padukone play the role of his wife, Romi Dev in the upcoming film, '83'.
It was on June 25, 1983, when Kapil Dev Ramlal Nikhanj, better known as Kapil Dev, had lifted every cricketer's dream trophy, ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy, for the first time in Indian cricket's history. He had brought some of the most splendid wins to team India back to back. Therefore, in order to pay homage to his contributions to Indian cricket, director, Kabir Khan is coming up with his biopic, 83 with Ranveer Singh in the lead role.
There is no doubt that Kapil Dev is one of the greatest captains and all-rounders in world cricket. However, not many people are aware of the way his wife, Romi Bhatia, whose role will be played by Deepika Padukone in the biopic, had supported him. Ever since the official trailer of the movie was dropped, Kapil Dev's biographical film, 83 has been garnering a lot of accolades and audiences cannot wait for the film to release.

In an interaction with Quint, when Kapil Dev was asked about his family's reaction to Deepika Padukone playing the role of his wife, Romi Dev, he shared that they had mixed reaction. Talking about the same, he said:
''I think mixed because I don’t know how much the role of my wife is in 83. So one does not realise that what they are trying to do there.”
Going further in the interview, Kapil Dev also shared his happiness on the fact that a talented actor like Ranveer Singh is playing his role. In his words:
“I think you feel happy that such a great, talented actor is trying to work on that. I was little worried also because it’s a very athletic job to do that. But the way he worked and the way he was working through out in the last one year, I couldn’t believe that somebody can be so much keen in trying to do so much in that movie.”

Coming back to Kapil Dev and Romi Bhatia's love story, it was the former cricketer's close friend, Sunil Bhatia, who had introduced him to one of his businesswoman-friends, Romi Bhatia. After meeting for the first time in Delhi, the former Indian captain had invited her to watch India's test match against West Indies in 1979. When Romi Bhatia had accepted his invitation and had gone to the stadium to watch his match, he had stunned her with a huge personal landmark for himself by scoring a century against West Indies.
In Kapil Dev's book, Triumph of the Spirit, the legendary cricketer had revealed how he had proposed to Romi Bhatia by asking her to click a picture of his on an advertising hoarding so they can show it to their kids. Since then, there was no looking back for the couple and they had got married in 1980. While proposing to his ladylove, Kapil Dev had said:
"Dear, would you like to take pictures of this beautiful place? We can show the picture to our children in the future."
