Karan Johar Once Recalled How Shabana Azmi Was Aghast Post Watching The Film, 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'

In an old interview, Karan Johar called his magnum opus, 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,' a politically incorrect film while recalling how Shabana Azmi called him and questioned after watching the film.

Karan Johar is the most eminent filmmaker in Bollywood. The handsome hunk gifted the cine-lovers with some much-loved movies, one of them being his debut movie, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The movie has a different fanbase, and even in today's time, people just love the film. KKHH featured Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, Sana Saeed, Archana Puran Singh, and Reema Lagoo in the lead roles. However, over the years, Karan talked about the movie and all the talks around it. It was back in 2019 when KJo shared how veteran actress, Shabana Azmi reacted to the movie.

Karan Johar shared how Shabana Azmi reacted after watching his magnum opus, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Back in 2019, Karan Johar, at the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne, talked about his debut movie, KKHH. The filmmaker stated that KKHH is actually the most politically incorrect film. Talking more about the same, KJo said that after watching the film, veteran actress, Shabana Azmi called him, and she was aghast about the same. KJo said:

"KKHH is the most politically incorrect film. I remember Shabana Azmi saw the film somewhere in the UK and she called me. She was aghast."

Going further in the same interview, Karan Johar shared how Shabana Azmi asked him why he chose to show that a girl is pretty with long hair only. Karan added that in reply, he could only say sorry as he knew Shabana Azmi was not speaking or questioning anything wrong. Karan recalled:

"She told me, ‘what have you shown? That a girl has short hair, so she’s not attractive, and now her hair is long and she’s pretty? What do you have to say to this?’ I said I’m sorry. She said, what? That’s all you have to say?’ I said yes because I know you’re right.”

Karan Johar talked about the casting process in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and recalled lying to SRK

In the same interview, Karan Johar also revealed the casting process for the movie, KKHH. The filmmaker shared that he was just excited to meet Shah Rukh Khan, who promised him that he would work in his film. Karan further recalled the time when even the script for the film was not ready. Despite that, he met with SRK and narrated the scene he had in his mind.

Karan said that he even lied to SRK that if the latter would like that one scene, the filmmaker would narrate the entire movie sequence. KJo also shared that actresses like Tabu, Urmila Matondkar, and Aishwarya turned down his offer. He also mentioned how it took him months to cast Rani. Talking more about the same, KJo stated:

"I was ecstatic to meet SRK. Kajol and he had promised that they would work in my first film. So, I remember going to meet him and I had no script, and just had a scene in my mind, which I narrated to him. He bought into my bullsh*t! I told him if you like this one scene then I will narrate the entire film to you, which was completely a lie… Tabu, Urmila (Urmila Matondkar), Aishwarya (Aishwarya Rai) turned me down, and Ash was the only one who was polite to call me back. It took months to cast for Rani’s part after Aditya Chopra recommended her.”

Karan Johar shared that the gender politics in KKHH was wrong

Earlier, in an IMUN event, Karan Johar reportedly criticised his film, KKHH. The filmmaker said that the gender politics in the movie was wrong. KJo mentioned that there's no doubt that the movie is loved because it brings nostalgia, but in the movie some portrayals were wrong.

Karan shared that from his point of view, the character of 'Rahul' was doing all the wrong things, and he would never want anyone to try the same in real life. In the same conversation, Karan also said that in the movie, 'Rahul' contradicts himself throughout the film, as he said that he would fall in love and get married once but did it twice.
