Karan further said that he is a producer's son, who was a production controller for 30 years. The filmmaker shared that his father took out a heavy loan to make 1980's Dostana, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha, which worked well. However, his consecutive films tanked at the box office. Karan was quoted as saying:
"I never felt that I have killed it or my film will do wonders at the box office. I feel like I will incur losses and I will come on the streets; because I am a producer’s son. My father was a production controller for 30 years and when he produced his first film, he took a very heavy loan to make Dostana, and the film worked. But after that when he made many other films and they all flopped."
Continuing his chain of thoughts, the Student Of The Year director revealed how the people in the industry treated them differently after Yash Johar's series of flops. He shared that they would be invited to film premieres and would be given very substandard seats. Sharing that his father wouldn't go to such premieres, Karan added:
"When movies don’t do well, the industry reacts differently. We were invited to premieres but were given very substandard seats. Dad wouldn’t go, but he would ask me to go. And I saw that pain in his eyes of why was he invited when he couldn’t be respected. Failure is a bitter pill to swallow."
Meanwhile, Karan also highlighted that he would always regret that his father, Yash Johar couldn't see the success of his production company, Dharma Productions. Sharing that his father left the world too soon, Karan added that Yash Johar could only see 5 to 6 years of his journey in the industry. He was quoted as saying:
"When films flop you get tagged, your failure is announced to the world and it was tough to see him go through that. He would have been very happy to see Dharma today. I feel sad that he left us very soon; he only saw 5-6 years of my journey. That is my biggest regret that he wasn’t around when Dharma was in its best phase."
After years of hard work and toil, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is so highly regarded that every newcomer dreams of working for the production house. Apart from successfully running Dharma, the filmmaker has ventured into the industry as an actor. He made his acting debut with the 2015 film Bombay Velvet, but the movie failed to leave an indelible impression on the audience.
