Adar Poonawalla’s Serene Productions has invested Rs 10 billion in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, and the news has shaken the Hindi film industry. Karan and Adar opened up and answered some of the most asked questions in an interview with CNBC TV18. Taking to the stage, Karan and Adar shared the details of how the deal came through and what made him believe that it was the right decision.

Karan Johar believes that Adar Poonawalla is the best partner he could find for Dharma Productions

In a recent interview with CNBC TV18, Karan revealed that Adar has been a dear friend of his for many years. He added that they mutually made the decision to come together, and he believes it was the best decision for both of them. Karan further said that for him, it was like two like-minded people were coming together, someone who would give him his creative space and yet strongly contribute to the business aspect of his venture. He also revealed that it was an easy decision to make as both he and the CEO of Dharma, Apurva, knew that Adar was the best partner they could have. He said: 

"In many ways, when Adar, who's a dear, dear friend for many years, spoke to me and we decided to come together on this, I felt it was the best decision for us. Because it was the coming together of two like-minded people, and yet someone who'd allow me my creative vision yet contribute so strongly to the growth by giving me his terrific business insight. I thought it was a great marriage of two minds. It really wasn't a big decision for us because when it came to Adar, it was just easy. Both Apurva (Dharma Productions CEO) and I, who've built it, knew that he's the best partnership for Dharma Productions and where we want to take it."

Adar Poonawalla was equally surprised by his decision to enter the media landscape

Adar Poonawalla’s announcement to partner with Dharma Production came as a surprise for cinema fanatics. However, the businessman also revealed that he was equally shocked by his decision. Adar revealed that he believes this is a good business opportunity, and he believes these are the areas that will thrive in the coming years. He stated:

"I was as shocked as everyone else was for making this move. It’s not such a bad business opportunity…with the verticals like music distribution and content creation, these are areas that will thrive in the next 5-7 years."

Karan Johar thinks that he is more accountable now than ever with his new role

Karan Johar shared that he feels more responsible for how the production house performs now than ever. He shared that Dharma has only been producing multiple films for the past decade, as before, it was just the films he directed, and his father curated, but now he felt like it was the right time to get some fresh insights. Karan will continue to look over the creative aspects of Dharma Productions and will take the role of Executive Director.
