Karisma Kapoor Reveals How She Got Her Nickname, Lolo, Spills Beans On Sister, Bebo's Name Origin

In a recent media interaction, Karisma Kapoor revealed how she and her sister, Kareena Kapoor got their respective nicknames, Lolo and Bebo.

Karisma Kapoor is a popular actress in Bollywood, famously known as Lolo. However, not many know the story behind the actress' nickname, and she recently revealed that it was her mother, Babita Kapoor, who gave her the name, Lolo. Karisma walked the ramp at Bombay Times Fashion Week 2024 and looked glamorous in a red-coloured lehenga paired with a shrug-style dupatta at the event.

Karisma Kapoor opens up about her nickname

During an interaction at the event, Karisma Kapoor opened up about her nickname and claimed that her mother, Bbaita Kapoor, used to be a big fan of Italian actress, model, and photojournalist, Gina Lollobrigida. Moreover, being a Sindhi, the actress' mother used to make a sweet dish called 'lolo loli', and thus, she was named Lolo. Karisma added:

"My mum used to be a big fan of Gina Lollobrigida. And, then my mother is Sindhi, so they'd make Meethi Lolo. You know Lolo Loli, That's how I got the name Lolo."

Further during the interaction, Karisma jokingly mentioned the funny pet names that her family members have had over the years, like Daboo, Chintu, and Chipoo. Karisma went on to reveal how her sister, Kareena Kapoor got her nickname Bebo and said:

"I got Lolo, and then my sister came, and they were like, ‘Let’s find something funny for her’. She was a baby, so my father called her Bebo, like oh Lolo Bebo."

When Karisma Kapoor stated that her actual name pronunciation is ‘Karizzma’

During a round table discussion with Neelesh Misra on Netflix India’s YouTube channel, Karisma Kapoor was asked to reveal the actual pronunciation of her name. To this, the actress revealed that it's ‘Kari-zz-ma’ and not 'Karishma' in Hindi. However, such a revelation left Pankaj Tripathi and Sara Ali Khan shocked. When Sara asked Karisma why the latter never corrected anybody, the latter revealed that it'd been years, and people call her with love and affection. Thus, it doesn't bother her anymore.

Kareena Kapoor Khan addressed the confusion about the pronunciation of Karisma Kapoor's name

In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Kareena Kapoor was asked about the confusion around the pronunciation of Karisma's name. To this, the Crew actress revealed that she just goes with the flow and would pronounce her sister's name just the way the other person would do it. She also revealed that in Karisma's passport, there is no 'H' in her name, and it's only Karisma, which means miracle. Kareena further added that it would be safest to call Karisma 'Lolo', as it's less controversial. She said:

"I go with the flow. I go with whatever the interviewer asks me. I am like… yeah whatever. A lot of people didn’t know, and they couldn’t pronounce because… What is Karisma versus Karishma? Karishma is like a miracle. Her name does not have an ‘H’ in it and it is just Karisma on her passport. I think we can just call her Lolo, that’s so much easier right?”

Talking about Karisma Kapoor's career in Bollywood, the actress made her acting debut with the movie, Prem Qaidi. Apart from that, she also swooned millions of hearts with her power-packed performance in movies like Jigar, Raja Babu, Andaz, Raja Hindustani, Coolie No. 1 and more. She took a long break from the industry in 2003 and made her comeback in 2012 with Dangerous Ishhq. Karisma holds a massive fanbase, who are super excited to see her on the big screens again.
