Kiran Rao recently opened up about her divorce from Aamir Khan. She revealed they were lucky that they parted ways during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Popular actor-filmmaker, Aamir Khan married Kiran Rao in 2005, after he parted ways from his first wife, Reena Dutta, in 2002. After six years of marital bliss, Aamir and Kiran welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, into their lives. Unfortunately, in 2021, the duo announced to the public via a joint statement that they had parted ways. However, to date, Aamir and Kiran remain on good terms, and recently, they have spoken about their divorce and the friendly bond that they share.
Off lately, Aamir and Kiran had their hands full with promotional activities for their upcoming film, Laapata Ladies. The film is all set to hit the theatres on March 1, 2024. Ahead of their film’s theatrical release, the two have opened up about their divorce during various media interactions. For the unversed, Aamir is producing Kiran's directorial comeback, Laapata Ladies. In an interview with DNA India, Kiran mentioned that she began working on the same film in 2018 when she was still married to Aamir. Later, during the production of the film, they decided to part ways. Recalling how she kept her personal and professional lives apart, Kiran said:
“We got this story in 2018. In 2020, we started writing it, and then the Covid happened. The film was literally written and prepped during the period when we were getting our divorce. For most people, it is a period of upheaval, a tumultuous period. But for Aamir and me, it was exceedingly smooth. The decision to end our marriage was something we were sure we wanted to do in a way where it would not end any other familial, emotional or professional bonds that we had. So honestly, it did not play as much of a part.”

Further into the conversation, the filmmaker shared that she wanted to change the definition of her relationship with Aamir Khan, and wanted to end the social contract. Kiran mentioned that the two wanted to work through things smoothly as they were conscious about their son, Azad, and did not want to traumatise him. She said:
“For me, it’s been quite easy at some level to manage the separation of having both personal relationship that is no longer marriage as well as professional. We decided that we wanted to change the definition of our relationship and end the social contract. We worked at it in a smooth way because we were conscious that Azad should not be, in any way, traumatised by this public breakup.”
Kiran Rao also felt that they were lucky to get divorced during the COVID-19 pandemic as they had to live together and their lives did not change much. She further added that she values Aamir and her quality of working together despite their divorce. She said:
“We were lucky that it happened during Covid, and we were living in the same house and our life didn’t change that much in a physical way. We spent much more time together as a result of Covid. It was quite smooth, and I continue to value our ability to work together and professionally rely on each other.”
