The latest installment from the iconic Mohanlal and Prithviraj starrer, L2: Empuraan, has set the box office on fire, racing past the Rs 100-crore mark worldwide within just 48 hours of release. The Malayalam film industry is raging with excitement as the Prithviraj Sukumaran-directed action-packed sequel to the 2019 blockbuster, Lucifer, has become the fastest Malayalam film to achieve this milestone, surpassing prior hits such as 2018, Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, and Pulimurugan.
Empuraan is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster thriller, Lucifer. The film, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, premiered on March 27, 2025, and features him alongside Mohanlal in key roles. On the opening day itself, Empuraan grossed a record-breaking Rs 22 crore net in India, with the Malayalam version alone contributing Rs 19 crore. By the end of Day 1, the film managed to generate Rs 67.5 crore worldwide. On Day 2, despite seeing a 44% dip in collections, the film generated an impressive Rs 11.75 crore, with Rs 10.75 crore coming from the Malayalam version.
Only two days in, L2: Empuraan has gained unstoppable momentum, not only in India but on a global scale. The film has smashed records and has now become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025 in Kerala, beating the records of Rekhachitram. It is also set to surpass Officer on Duty and even claim the title of the highest-grossing Malayalam film of the year.
Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan is not just smashing records in India but is also dominating the global box office. Made on a staggering budget of Rs. 180 crore, the film had already become a global cinema sensation, registering the highest-ever opening for a Malayalam movie overseas. Within only two days, the film created new records in overseas markets, including the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the USA. In the UK alone, it recorded an opening day collection of GBP 6,28,000 (Rs. 7 crore), making it the biggest-ever Indian film opener in the region.
Empuraan features a stellar cast, including Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, and Jerome Flynn, who has played in the global hit high-fantasy series, Game of Thrones. After the first impression, the film received considerable praise for its gripping storyline, high-octane action sequences, and powerful performances by the star cast. According to expert prediction, the film could soon surpass the lifetime collection of Manjummel Boys within the first week itself. For those unaware, Manjummel Boys turned out to be one of the biggest Malayalam films, generating Rs. 241 crore. Empuraan could also potentially become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. The film’s advance bookings for the weekend have also been strong, ensuring its continued dominance at the box office.
