In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, the actress revealed she was advised against doing the film as it was being speculated audiences might not like to see Sanjay Dutt playing the role of a disabled person.
In the same conversation, Madhuri Dixit recalled that there were people who doubted and questioned her decision to do the film. The Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! actress is known for her immaculate performances. At the time, she had just established herself in the industry when she signed the romantic drama starring Sanjay Dutt. Madhuri shared:
"This is Sajan. What a beautiful film. What songs are in that movie. And I remember when I had signed this film, many people said, why are you doing this movie? It's not going to work."
Madhuri shared concerns regarding her signing the movie, which essentially stemmed from the character, Sanjay Dutt was asked to play. Sanjay, who was known for his action-packed roles until the 1980s, was supposed to play a differently-abled character in the film. However, people were not sure if Sanjay Dutt would be like in the role of 'Sagar' after being established as a powerful character like 'Rocky'. Madhuri Stated:
"People said Sanjay Dutt is an action star. And he is shown like this. Like a handicapped person. How can this happen? This is not going to work. But once the film was made, and you know, it created history after that."
Even though people continued to be sceptical about the film, their doubts quickly disappeared when Saajan was released. The film performed spectacularly at the box office. The audience loved the story, and its songs topped the music charts. The movie was written down as the highest-grossing film of the year 1991. The romantic drama significantly contributed to the success of Salman, Sanjay, and Madhuri's careers and is still remembered as one of the most memorable Hindi films.
