Many Bollywood actors have created a permanent place in people’s hearts. Similarly, there are a few actors who are known for their negative and villainous roles. They, too, have left a lasting impression on people with the characters they portray on screen. One such villain is Mahesh Anand, one of the famous villains of Indian cinema in the late 80s and early 90s.
Mahesh Anand began his career as a model and dancer in the glamour world, and later forayed into films. He made his acting debut in 1984 with the film, Karishma. His well-built and masculine physique made him suitable for villainous roles. Throughout his career, Mahesh appeared in over 300 films and was hailed for his roles in films like Bhavani Junction, Insaaf, Shahenshah, Sone Par Suhaaga, Ganga Jamuna Saraswati, Coolie No. 1, Vishwatma, Toofaan and few others.
Despite his flourishing career, Mahesh Anand had a tragic ending. The actor died penniless and was also abandoned by his family. Let us read on to know the tragic life of Mahesh Anand, who was once a leading name in Indian cinema.
Unlike his professional life, Mahesh Anand’s personal life was never a bed of roses. The actor allegedly dated 12 women and first got married to Reena Roy’s sister, Barkha Roy. He then tied the knot with Miss India International, Erica Maria D’Souz, with whom he had a son. His third marriage was to Madhu Malhotra in 1999.
The actor again got married for the fourth time to actress, Usha Bachani, which also ended. Mahesh gave love another chance when he married for the fifth time to a Russian woman named Lana. He announced his fifth marriage and introduced Lana as his wife on Facebook.
Despite his early success in Bollywood, Mahesh Anand faced a lot of financial struggles and spent 18 years in poverty. The actor was cheated by his stepbrother, who duped him of Rs. 6 crores. His family and only son abandoned him. The actor’s financial condition was so poor that he couldn’t even afford drinking water. In one of his posts on Facebook, Mahesh revealed his condition and wrote:
“My friends and everyone call me an alcoholic. I have no family. My stepbrother has cheated me of Rs 6 crores. I have done more than 300 films, but I don't even have money to buy drinking water. I don't have a single friend in this world, it's very sad.”
Once, Mahesh Anand had an altercation with actor, Akshay Kumar. During the filming of Waqt Hamara, Mahesh misbehaved with a woman in a nightclub. And Akshay Kumar intervened to protect the woman. This led to a physical altercation between Akshay and Mahesh.
On the tragic day of February 9, 2019, Mahesh Anand was found dead in his Versova flat. The 57-year-old actor lived alone at his flat, and it was his maid who alerted the actor’s sister when he didn’t respond for two days. When the police forced open the door, they found the actor lying on his sofa unconscious, along with alcohol bottles and food.
His body had started decomposing, and the post-mortem report stated that the actor had been dead for three days. The report also ruled out any foul play, and the doctors suggested the actor died naturally.
Mahesh Anand’s tragic death is a reminder of the vacuum in an actor’s life despite the glittering fame of the glamour world.
