Mahesh Bhatt Recalls His Dad Accepting His Mom By Putting 'Sindoor' On Her Mortal Remains

Mahesh Bhatt opened up on his traumatic childhood, recalled how his father only accepted his mother as his wife at the latter's death bed!

One of the most-experienced filmmakers and script-writer of Bollywood, Mahesh Bhatt has contributed several years of his dedicated hardwork to the film industry. However, despite such immense successes, it seems the actor has still not moved ahead from his traumatic past, including some of his most tragic fates in childhood and adolescence. And now, the actor fondly speaks about his mother.

Mahesh Bhatt recalls how his father married his mother only at her deathbed

In a candid interview with Bollywood actor, Arbaaz Khan at his chat show, Invincibles, Mahesh opened up about the fateful day when his mother and former actress, Shirin Mohammad Ali passed away. He mentioned how his father came to her funeral to express grief, along with his legal wife. Interestingly, he also mentioned how at only the final time did his father, Nanabhai Bhatt put sindoor on his mother’s hair parting, accepting her as his wife. Mahesh recalled his reaction back then to such a late decision and mentioned:

“I remember that when she died, and my father came with his wife, that’s the time he put sindoor in her maang and I said too little too late. That broke me down. She always wanted a picture of him publicly accepting her.”

Mahesh Bhatt shares that his mother’s last wish was to be buried in traditional Muslim form

Further in the interview, Mahesh recollected his mother’s last wish before her death and mentioned how she wanted to be buried and not cremated like a Hindu woman. However, when Mahesh mentioned this to his father, who had come to his mother’s funeral, he clearly refused to go along and perform such rituals. Recollecting how his father’s refusal broke his heart again, he mentioned:

“I told him that she told me that she would be like to be buried where her mother’s buried in the shia kabristan. I looked at his face and his face went white. And he said with folded hands mujhe maaf kar de beta, mera mazhab mujhe vahan jaane ki permission nahi. That broke my heart.”

When Mahesh mentioned how he felt like an illegitimate child

Mahesh Bhatt’s childhood has ill, tainted memories instead of happy ones. Mahesh, in the very same interview, had revealed how he felt the stigma of being an illegitimate child of his parents early on in his life. For the unversed, Mahesh was born out of wedlock to an already married man, Nanabhai Bhatt and his lady love, Shirin Mohammad Ali. Their affair was certainly an epitome of an inter-faith love, and this became the very reason why his father could not accept him or his mother publicly. Therefore, he has often felt the stigma of being an illegitimate and unwanted child.
