Back in 2013, Mallika Sherawat slammed a journalist for provoking her and showing her in a bad light over her 'India is regressive' remark.
Bollywood actress, Mallika Sherawat is well known for her bold and glamorous personality. She rose to fame during the mid-2000s, and worked in some entertaining films like Murder, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Welcome, and Double Dhamaal, among others. Mallika challenged the traditional norms and often drew criticism from others. Among the several controversies of Mallika's life, it was her statements about the rising crime against women, female infanticide and other issues that caught the most attention.
It so happened that during her Cannes debut in 2013, Mallika Sherawat portrayed her motherland in a bad shape as she claimed that India is regressive for women. Talking about her then-upcoming film, Dirty Politics, the actress shared that India is a hypocritical society where women are at the bottom as compared to men. She also made some shocking statements about her country while representing the nation on the international platform.

After Mallika returned to India, a press conference took place, which sent shockwaves to the entire media fraternity. During the same, a female journalist provoked Mallika to clear her take and asked why she came back to India if she finds the country ‘regressive and depressing'. Reacting to it, Mallika advised the reporter to do her homework and said:
"I think you need to do your homework well. I said Indian society is regressive for women, see the interview again."
Soon, the journalist shot back at Mallika and asked, "Why do you think Indian society is regressive for women?" Expressing her honest views, Mallika chose to quote facts and figures and added:
"Today I read in the newspaper, according to UNFPA, 40 per cent of Indian women are married below the age of 18, I think it is a very very regressive state for women. And I stand by it."

As the argument between the two continued, the journalist asked Mallika why she wanted to find true love in India, if she had so many problems with the nation. To this, Mallika replied, "I never said I am not happy with India." Going further into the argument, the journalist mentioned that Mallika's statement created a huge controversy all across the globe. Then, Mallika pointed out that she did nothing wrong talking about the state of women in the country, and said:
"So, as a woman, I should lie about the state of women that's in our country? I didn't lie. I won't lie. I said the truth. As a woman you have to correct it, it's your responsibility."
