The popular cooking reality show, MasterChef Australia is back with season 17 and joining an array of contestants is the popular Indian-origin chef, Depinder Chhibber. The Indian chef, Depinder, won many hearts during her journey on MasterChef Australia 13 with her refined and mouthwatering Indian cuisine.
As the current season of the show has brought back many fan-favourite contestants, it is yet another chance for Deepinder to win the prestigious title. For the unversed, during her stint in MasterChef Australia 13, Depinder enjoyed immense fandom and people from across the globe rooted for the multi-talented chef. Let us take a look at Depinder’s life and the force behind her passion for cooking.
Depinder Chhibber, who was born in New Delhi, moved to Newcastle when she was 11 years old. Depinder’s love for cooking began after seeing the woman in her family. She witnessed her grandmother, mother and aunts cooking scrumptious Indian meals at home and during festivals, which fascinated her and inspired her to cook from an early age.
Depinder lives in Sydney with her husband Gurkirat, and their daughters. Depinder belongs to a big family, of which only her immediate relatives live in Australia and the rest of her family lives in India. In a throwback interview, the popular chef talked about her family in India and said:
“It's like up to 80 people, there's just so many of them every time that I go back [to India], I make sure that I visit every single one of them, especially the older generation.”
Depinder Chhibber was influenced by the women in her family, but her biggest supporter when she participated in MasterChef Australia 13 was her husband, Gurkirat. Depinder married Gurkirat in 2018 and amid the millions of fans Depinder has, her husband stands on top. Even in their home, Gurkirat loves taking charge of the tandoor and also loves trying different cuisines with her.
While the women in Depinder’s life ignited her passion for cooking, it was the footsteps of her father that she followed. Just like her father, Depinder is a pharmacist by profession and did her Masters in the same field.
Despite spending her life in Australia, Depinder Chhibber never compromised on her Indian roots. Unlike her classmates, who brought sandwiches, Depinder carried paranthas to school. In an interview with The Times of India, Depinder once recalled how she stuck to her identity in Australia and said:
“When I was in school, my mom didn’t make sandwiches for us for lunch. I used to carry paranthas and wrapped pickle. I used to get really embarrassed, because when you open the tiffin box it gives a different smell. For a school kid, who is trying to make new friends, fitting in a different country, it’s a very daunting experience. It’s not normal, but it’s different. It’s important to stick to your roots and believe in it. If you won’t believe in it, others won’t.”
After MasterChef Australia 13, Depinder launched her super club called ‘Ghar’, which means ‘Home’. It offers authentic Indian food and dining experience. Her love for Indian food and her passion for cooking had given a classic touch to her super club.
Depinder Chhibber’s journey at MasterChef Australia has motivated millions. Despite having a stable career, she didn’t let her passion for cooking fade away.
