Usha boasts an exceptional educational background. According to the New York Times, she holds a bachelor's degree in history from Yale University and a master's of philosophy degree from the University of Cambridge. A profile from the Munger, Tolles, and Olson law firm lists her academic accomplishments as Executive Development Editor of the Yale Law Journal and Managing Editor of the Yale Journal of Law and Technology.
Professionally, Usha has made a name for herself in the legal field. She has worked as a clerk for Justices John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh. Meanwhile, she continued her studies as a Gates scholar at Cambridge, following four years of heavy extracurricular engagement at Yale.
Born as James David Bowman to a mother who battled addiction and a father who left them when he was a toddler, Vance was raised by his grandparents. Usha crossed paths with her now-husband, JD Vance, when she was studying at Yale Law School. The pair got married in 2014 in two ceremonies, one of which was done by a Hindu priest. At present, Usha and JD Vance are parents to three children.
The couple has proven to be a formidable team, with Usha playing a significant role in her husband's professional endeavors. The latter had a significant influence on JD Vance's viewpoints on the rural white American experience in his critically praised book, Hillbilly Elegy, which Ron Howard eventually turned into a movie. In his memoir, which was released in 2016, JD Vance described his wife as a 'Yale spirit guide' who helped him navigate his life at the prestigious institution.

"I was never baptised. I was raised Christian but never baptised. I was first baptised in 2018. Usha was actually raised non-Christian. But I remember when I started to re-engage with my own faith, Usha was very supportive."
Donald Trump named JD Vance his running mate on July 15, 2024, at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Meanwhile, Usha, who had worked at Munger, Tolles, and Olson since 2015, resigned to fully support her husband during his election campaign.
