Nikita Porwal’s journey from a simple family in Ujjain to the world of pageantry

People often think that beauty pageant contestants are all about looks and appearances. But Nikita proves that's not always the case. She's passionate about animals and social justice. Throughout the pageant, she's been really open about the importance of equality and finding your own way without relying on others.

Nikita Porwal, a big fan of actor and Miss World 1994, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, hails from a humble family in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. She comes from a place where terms like ‘women empowerment’ and ‘feminism’ don’t hold meaning. However, growing up with an older brother and a sister, Nikita never felt ignored or inferior in the household. In an interview with PTI, Nikita said:

“I come from a very humble and simple family of Ujjain. My parents were not well aware of the modern terms which we often use like feminism, women empowerment and justice but I have always seen that they made sure that they practised that with me.”

Nikita also recalled how her birth was celebrated like a victory even when her family had expected a boy when her mother got pregnant with her. She said:

“It is easier with two boys in a family rather than two girls. But when I was born, to everyone's surprise, my father, my uncle, my grandfather celebrated it like a victory, which they didn't do during my brother's birth.”

Despite coming from a traditional family, Nikita Porwal was fortunate to grow up in an environment where equality and respect were ingrained. Her parents and grandparents modelled these values through their actions, teaching her the importance of empathy, balance, and supporting others, especially women and children. Instead of explicitly labelling these as ‘feminism’ or ‘women's empowerment’, her family demonstrated these principles through their actions. Her family made her understand the true meaning of feminism and supported her in paving the journey from a humble background to representing her country on a global stage.

Nikita Porwal’s views on feminism and advice to young girls

When Femina asked Nikita Porwal if she viewed pageants as crucial steps for beauty queens, she agreed that these pageants provide great opportunities for people like her who don’t have a ‘godfather’ or any big connection in the industry.

With her future full of promise, Nikita has provided some valuable insights into the meaning of true feminism. For the young girls out there, Nikita advised by saying:

“If you want to join a beauty pageant if you want to be a housewife or if you want to be a corporate worker, be anything you want but with your own choice’. The meaning of feminism has changed to doing a job in the corporate (sector), but sometimes it’s also about choosing to be a housewife or to cook for your husband. So, anything that is done with choice is true feminism. Do anything you set your heart to, and you can be anything you want.”

Nikita is all set for her next target: the 'Miss World' crown
