The government’s top honour in the film industry, the 'Dadasaheb Phalke Award' will shortly be given to actor, Mithun Chakraborty who is well-known for his roles in movies such as Mrigayaa, Surakshaa, Disco Dancer, and Dance Dance. In January 2024, the Indian government also gave Mithun Chakraborty the 'Padma Bhushan', the country's third-highest civilian honour.

Mithun Chakraborty to receive Dadasaheb Phalke award at 70th National Film Awards

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on the news on September 30, 2024, on his X handle. He highlighted the importance of recognizing talent in Indian cinema and emphasized the significance of celebrating those who have shaped the industry. Expressing his excitement about honouring a cinematic legend, stating:

“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Shri. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”

Additionally, the I&B minister announced that Mithun Chakraborty will be honored at this year’s 70th National Film Awards on October 8, 2024. As a three-time National Award winner, Mithun's achievements in cinema have left a lasting impact, and this award further acknowledges his remarkable contributions to the industry. The ceremony promises to be a celebration of excellence in Indian cinema, highlighting the legends who have shaped its landscape.

Mithun Chakraborty’s reaction to the honour

After the government revealed that he will be receiving the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty said on September 30, 2024, that he was speechless. The 74-year-old, who described himself as a 'boy from the footpaths of Kolkata', said he never would have thought he would be given such an honour. He said:

“I have no language to express how I feel. Na main hass sakta hun, na khushi mein ro sakta hun (I cannot smile, nor can I cry in happiness).”

Namashi Chakraborty's heartfelt tribute to his father's long-awaited recognition

Mithun Chakraborty's son, Namashi Chakraborty expressed his joy and pride, saying the whole Chakraborty family is overjoyed and he further said that his father is a real legend and has at last gotten the credit he so well deserves. In his words:

 “We all are very very overwhelmed. We are feeling extremely proud and elated. And I genuinely feel that my father is truly a legend. This is a long-due award for my father. But I am so so happy that he has been finally honoured with what he actually truly deserves.”

Mithun Chakraborty's son, Namashi Chakraborty shares his father's global fame

Namashi gave a story about Mithun Chakraborty’s enormous fame while he was in Los Angeles for a photo shoot. He reported that whenever he announces during Uber rides that he’s from India, the first answer he gets in Los Angeles is that India has a sizable Armenian population and Mithun Chakraborty is their favourite actor. This portrays that how popular Mithun Chakraborty is outside of India. He said:

“I am in Los Angeles. I am shooting. Just to give you an anecdote of what a famous man Mithun is, my father is – Do you know in LA, there are a lot of Armenian and Russian people? The population of Los Angeles has a lot of Armenian crowd. Whenever I ever sit on an Uber and if they ask me which country I belong from and I say India. The first thing they say is, ‘My favourite actor is Mithun Chakraborty.’ And this has been happening ever since I got into LA. So, his stardom is not just in India but worldwide."

Known affectionately as 'Mithun da', the actor effortlessly transitioned between commercial and art-house filmmaking, garnering both critical and box office success. In the 1976 film Mrigayaa, directed by Mrinal Sen, Mithun Chakraborty, now 74, made his acting debut and went on to win the National Film Award for best actor. His widespread reputation came after the 1982 release of Disco Dancer, a huge box-office hit in both India and the Soviet Union. For his role in Agneepath, he was recognized in 1990 with the Filmfare Award for best supporting actor. He continued acting over the years, appearing in movies like Commando and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, The Kashmir Files and many more.
