Mumtaz opened up about her rivalry with Sharmila Tagore and recalled her working experience with other fellow veteran actors.
Veteran actress, Mumtaz is one of the legendary stars of the Hindi film industry. She made her Bollywood debut at the mere age of 11 and worked in films for nearly three decades. Over the years, Mumtaz has, time and again, grabbed attention for her candid revelations about her colleagues. Among her equation with her co-stars, it was her rivalry with Sharmila Tagore that made the most headlines.
Earlier, in an interview with Times Entertainment, Mumtaz spoke about her rivalry with Sharmila Tagore and mentioned that heroines cannot be friends. She also added that they never went for dinners or hung out together, and their equation has always been like that. Now, in a candid interaction with Rediff, Mumtaz declined the reports of her rivalry with Sharmila Tagore and clarified that there is no bad blood between them. In her words:
“I respect her (Sharmila Tagore) a lot. She is far more educated and sophisticated than me. I started working at the age of eight, so I learned everything on the job. Whether it is Sharmila or any other heroine, I never had time to interact with them.”

Speaking along the same lines, Mumtaz also recalled that both Sharmila Tagore and she had worked extensively with Rajesh Khanna, but the veteran actor never encouraged any rivalry between them. However, she added that while she had no flops with Rajesh, Sharmila did. In her words:
“But yes, I did more films with Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) than Sharmilaji. It was god’s blessing that not one film of mine with Kaka flopped. Sharmilaji had flops with him. Rajesh Khanna never fueled the rivalry or spoke a word against Sharmilaji. ”
She further added that Rajesh Khanna was possessive about her and would get upset when she signed films with other heroes. However, he worked with many other actresses, and she never sulked. Mumtaz said that Rajesh cared for her and added:
“But Rajesh would get upset when I signed films with other heroes like Dharmendraji or Devsaab. But he worked with other heroines; I never sulked. He thought he owned me. But never mind, it meant that he cared for me.”

Further in the conversation, the 77-year-old actress also talked about her experience of working with Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu. She revealed that it was a pleasure shooting with them as they treated her with so much care and love. Recalling the wonderful days, Mumtaz said:
“Sairaji was so warm during the shooting. The first scene required me to hit Dilip saab. I was petrified. He said, ‘Why won’t you hit me? Hit me hard.’ I will never forget the kindness of people like Prithviraj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Mehmood saab, Sunil Dutt saab… we lost them so early.”
